Merging hay and movin’ cows to their next rotation. It’s been a challenging year for hay but we managed to get a 3rd on a couple of fields.

We are planning to do fall calving moving forward. We’re dna testing to determine the best crosses for next year. There are so many considerations that go into this. We know the animals we prefer, just looking to replicate them with proper lineage.

We turned the cow calf pairs to one of the last few rotations before we need to start feeding hay. I made this one larger than I should have, allowing them to venture into the deep trees. Added a little more work and time to “checking cows”.

The horned and polled pair are Purebred Red Devons. On the other pair, mother is 1/2 Devon calf is 3/4 Red Devon. We are outcrossing and building our genetics and still have our foundation females on the farm.

It’s definitely been a dry year. We’ve used a sacrificial yard during the bulk of the drought and recently moved back to the alfalfa/grass field that gave a little more regrowth than our other grass pasture rotations. The girls are always hungry and look forward to moving their single line poly fence ahead a bit.
