Everyone got fresh sheets and the barn got a slightly new layout, now featuring a tack pen! The tack pen is being used to store the feed, kidding pens and any extra feeders and waterers. This is an awesome addition to our barn layout because KNF Farms SW Nilla Bean Niblet and KNF Farms SW Winona Meadow are little escape artists and love to treat themselves to some extra feed. This will prevent them from having access to the feed bin and gaining any extra unwanted weight.

It’s time!!!! We are a little behind on our breeding announcements for this winter, but I’ve finally finished them up. This winter we expect to have some very flashy kids with the possibilities of moonspots, blue eyes and polled horn status. We are super excited to be using two yearling bucks, Wingler Acres Midnight Mayhem and KNF Farms Next Episode. We can’t wait to see what they’ll produce and improve in our herd. These kids will be expected to arrive from the middle of December to beginning of January.

The weather is finally starting to cool off some, allowing the herd to enjoy sun bathing and spending time in the pasture rather than the barn. Being outside allows them to receive much needed sunlight along with fresh air, as the barn can sometimes have poor ventilation when there’s no breeze. Even with all the beautiful weather, Jellybean and Honeybun had to inform me that the one thing that could make the day even better is a nice warm bottle of milk. Which they happily received, resulting in milk mustaches LOL.

Livestock guardian dogs continue to be a crucial part in protecting our herd, while we do not have many predators around we do tend to see coyotes and foxes. With Zoey (seen in the video) almost going head to head with a coyote a few months ago. These dogs are bred to protect their herd and watch out for their wellbeing. For our herd that also entails some baby sitting here and there. As you can see these dogs are super patient with the babies and tend to become their own personal jungle gym demonstrated by Oreo. We love and appreciate both of our LGDs Maverick and Zoey, our herd wouldn’t be the same without them!

We have a set of brothers looking for new pastures, Onyx and Fudge. Both have blue eyes, the buckskin, Fudge, is moonspotted and also polled. The black one, Onyx, is disbudded. Born July 3rd, up to date on CDT, and can be registered with ADGA. They can go intact or wethered. Both have sweet personalities and Onyx loves head scratches. The doelings got to enjoy a nice crisp cucumber from our garden and it’s safe to say they absolutely loved it! Honeybun had to paw at me to let me know just how good it was. We’ve had an over abundance of vegetables out of our garden and love to share them with the herd. Another of their favorites are pumpkins, so they can’t wait till this fall!

Update on Claire and Oreo (or fondly known as El Chapo per my coworker lol). Both are doing well, Claire has decided that she wants time to recover and rest from the surgery meaning that Oreo had become a bottle baby. With that being said he is absolutely loving it because he gets to visit the vet clinic that I work for on a daily basis and the staff absolutely love him! This arrangement gives Claire time to heal physically and mentally from her surgery and allows Oreo to receive the proper nutrition and care without unneeded stress on mom and baby. Oreo has already gained quite the personality and will make an awesome herd sire for anyone looking for a potentially polled and moonspotted buckling as he is available!

Breeding and raising livestock is not always the easiest business to run, and today we got that reminder. Claire went into labor this morning around 8:30 and everything seemed to be progressing well until it wasn’t. The fluid sac that typically holds the kid presented itself but the the kid was not with it. When checking her I found that the kids head was the only thing present but was stuck in the birth canal. This meant the legs were back and it was stuck. I tried to reposition and eventually got a hold of both legs, which unfortunately pushed the head back into the stomach region. After fighting to pull the kid for almost an hour and a half I made the decision to call the vet and perform a c-section in hopes to give mom and babies the best outcome. My coworkers were amazing and helped to deliver twin bucklings, unfortunately the stuck twin was DOA leaving Claire with one adorable little buckling, who the girls deemed Oreo. Claire and Oreo are both doing great now, but we will keep a close eye on them for the next few days.
