September is National Tasting Project

The National Tasting Project (NTP) is one of the most exciting ways American Wine Society members connect, learn, and share their passion for wine. Through NTP, members across the country taste the same curated wines, score them using the AWS Wine Evaluation format, and compare results with other chapters.

Started in 1990 by Pam Davey and friends, the mission of NTP has always been to help members calibrate their palates alongside AWS Judges. The very first wines tasted were California Merlots, and since then the program has expanded to explore wine regions and varietals from across the globe. Recent years have featured regions such as Paso Robles, Illyria, Portugal, Sicily, and Southern Rhone.

On Saturday, Lake Washington joined the Puget Sound Chapter to sample 9 incredible wines from iconic Australian producers including Torbreck Vintners, Henschke, Two Hands, Mollydooker, Penfolds, and Tyrrell’s Wines.🍇With tastings ranging from Semillon and Riesling to Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and blends, we explored the many valleys of Southern Australia. Each glass offered a chance not only to enjoy world-class wines, but also to deepen understanding and appreciation of the diversity in winemaking styles.

Here’s to another year of discovery, learning, and raising a glass together through the National Tasting Project! 🥂

Busting Wine Myths: Let's Set the Record Straight!

Time to debunk some of the most common wine myths that have been floating around for way too long! Don't let these misconceptions keep you from enjoying wine to the fullest.

MYTH vs. REALITY:
🚫 MYTH: "Expensive wine is always better" ✅ REALITY: Price doesn't guarantee quality! Some amazing wines are very affordable, while some pricey bottles disappoint. Trust your palate, not the price tag.
🚫 MYTH: "Organic wine doesn't contain sulfites" ✅ REALITY: All wines contain naturally occurring sulfites from fermentation. "Organic" wines just don't have added sulfites beyond natural levels.
🚫 MYTH: "You should always finish a bottle once opened" ✅ REALITY: Properly stored opened wine can last 3-5 days!
🚫 MYTH: "Screw caps mean cheap wine" ✅ REALITY: Many premium wineries use screw caps because they preserve freshness better than cork and eliminate the risk of cork taint.
🚫 MYTH: "Decant red wines to reduce harsh tannins" ✅ REALITY: Tannins are so slow to react to oxygen that even hours of breathing don’t do much to soften them up.

What wine myth have you heard that made you scratch your head?

Celebrating Washington’s Women Winemakers!

This August 19th, join us in raising a glass to the incredible women shaping Washington’s wine scene! From the volcanic soils of Red Mountain to the cool coasts of Bainbridge Island, women winemakers are crafting distinctive, expressive wines and leading the way with creativity and care.

We’re proud to highlight a few standout names:
Mari Womack of Damsel Cellars (Woodinville) – a fearless, all-female team making Rhône-style wines with serious flair.
Betsey Wittick of Bainbridge Vineyards (Puget Sound AVA) – a grower-winemaker farming organically with draft horses and leading a cooperative winery model.
Ashley Trout, Brook & Bull and Vital Wines – blending artistry with social impact, including healthcare support for vineyard workers.

Let’s celebrate their talent, passion, and leadership. Share more women wine makers in Washington and tell us what you love about their wines.

August introduced Lake Washington Chapter to TruthTeller Winery on Saturday! Thanks to Chris Loeliger and Keith Whisenhunt, who shared their wit and wine making stories in a fun filled evening. Make no mistake, these wine makers love to share the joys and mishaps of wine making. The tasting highlighted both left and right bank Rhone style blends and a comparison of a 2015 and 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon. Each sip sparked great conversation and appreciation for the craft behind it. Like and comment with your favorite wine miscreants.

Summer Sparkles: Bubbles Make Everything Better!

When the temperature rises, there's nothing quite like the refreshing pop of a perfectly chilled sparkling wine! Whether you're poolside, at a picnic, or celebrating summer sunsets, bubbles are the ultimate warm-weather companion.

Perfect Summer Sparklers:
Prosecco - Light, fruity, and affordable for everyday sipping
Champagne - The classic choice for special summer celebrations
Cava - Spanish bubbles with great value and crisp freshness
Rosé Sparkling - Pretty in pink with berry notes and summer vibes
Moscato d'Asti - Lightly sweet and low alcohol - perfect for brunch!

☀Summer Serving Tips: Chill for at least 3 hours before serving (45-50°F is perfect). Use an ice bucket to keep bottles cold during outdoor gatherings. Pour slowly down the side of the glass to preserve those beautiful bubbles.

Fun fact: More sparkling wine is consumed during summer months than any other season worldwide!
What summer food do you love pairing with sparkling wine?

July’s Event Recap: Discovering the Wines of Spain!

This month, we explored the unique wine regions of Spain—and learned that the rain in Spain really does flow from the mountains to the plains, shaping some truly incredible wines along the way!

We tasted our way through Albariño, Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Monastrell, each offering a glimpse into Spain’s rich winemaking heritage. A special thank you to Jan and Tom Cobett, who shared stories and tasting tips from their two-week road trip through the wineries of Northern Spain.

Missed the event? Stay tuned for August's event — that one’s too delicious to miss!

Tasting Tempranillo across Spain!
Let’s dive into one of Spain’s most iconic red grapes—Tempranillo! This versatile variety is the heart of legendary regions like Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Toro.

Tasting Notes
Expect aromas of dried cherry, cedar, and to***co. On the palate, you’ll often find flavors like plum, fig, leather, and a hint of vanilla—especially in oak-aged styles.

Perfect Pairings
Tempranillo loves savory foods—try it with Manchego cheese, grilled lamb, or your favorite tapas spread.

Regional Styles
🍷 Rioja: elegant, aged, full of vanilla and spice
🍷 Ribera del Duero: richer, more powerful, often bolder in tannins
🍷 Toro: intense, structured, and full-bodied

Which style do you prefer—classic Rioja smoothness or Ribera’s robust edge?
