The passing of Jimmy Carter has been very moving for me. A man of real faith, kindness and integrity. As his grandson said “you can cram a lot in to a hundred years.”!
He was the first president I voted for. And I was proud to. As we now enter this age of unprecedented kleptocracy where the government is bought and sold by the billionaire class who then give themselves massive tax cuts, it’s almost quaint to think back on a time where personal integrity was the defining characteristic of a leader. Was it without fault? Of course not! But it never felt like the government considered the people dupes and fools.
Since his passing I’ve been thinking a lot about purpose and clarity of meaning in my own life. What a legacy that is for anyone to leave. RIP Jimmy.

Sometimes the Pomona Guardians throw you a rope. In this case it’s the incredible, curated library of a fellow grower who has moved out of his orchard. Some real gems here! I’m stunned with gratitude. And it comes at the perfect time. I’m refocusing my energies on growing, learning from and reapplying my energy to my weird, unique orchard and away from selling cider. This gift is like a hand on my shoulder, both reassuring and pushing just enough.
BTW: I actually already have a bunch of these books. I’ll be regifting any duplicates to likeminded growers. More on that.

I’ve been reading the lovely book Breadsong. In it, she describes the song a loaf sings when it first comes out of the oven. So true!
Wednesday is bake day around here. Today I baked these two sandwich style loaves. Einkorn and Red Fife wheat flour, dark rye, buckwheat and spelt flour too! Been cheating with an everything bagel blend in the dough- sesame seed, poppy, garlic and onion with a touch of dill. The flavor is humming!
Haven’t quite dialed in the crust but it’s getting close.
IVE GOT AN EXTRA LOAF IF ANYONE LOCAL WANTS TO COME GET IT.
Also, using these beat to s**t little no spray apples to create a new sourdough starter. Cause I can.
Bake a loaf for your brain!

People of earth! Most one person micro cideries are looking to expand operations. I’m trying to get smaller! Hence, we are moving out some equipment we just aren’t using anymore. Such as:

Lancman 170 liter bladder press $1800

Marchisio 700L variable capacity tank $600

Both used and in great working condition. DM me if interested.
(We are not going out of business but are reconfiguring how and how much we make cider and mead. Also we need more room.)

So here’s everything you need to know. In 1991 I waited on Donald Trump (married to Ivana) and Marla Maples on two different occasions. Both times he slapped my arm and said “great job”. And both times he stiffed me!!! Zero tip! I asked around the hood and found out that’s what he does. Donald Trump does not tip!!! What else do you need to know. Fortunately the restaurant owner knew about his reputation and covered me.
The man is a scumbag.

22 degrees at 6am in the hollow. The Super moon has dropped our first hard frost over everything. And just like that this long luxurious summerfall comes to a crinkly end. The last of the flowers will turn downwards and curl in on themselves. Muted reds and greens will turn brown and ruddy. And we’ll start clearing decks and patios and porches. It’s a beautiful time of year. Now where did I put that fleece hoodie?

Meet the triangle bottom board. One of my favorite tools. When you want to extract honey from a hive box you have to move the bees out. So you place this board below the box and leave it for 24 hours. The bees move down into the hive but can’t figure out how to get back up thru this board. Turns out when bees hit an impediment they always turn right!! So they move back out of the triangle into the lower hive. This will remove 90% of the bees without chems or blowers.
I can’t stop wondering who figured this out! Who learned that bees always turn right and how to use that info. It’s genius!!!
(Just don’t wait more than 24 hours because they will figure it out!)

36 degrees up in the hollow. Feels colder. And just like that fall moves down the mountain and settles in. Too soon! We’ve got tomatoes and peppers to ripen. Also need a couple more weeks to let the bees pull in the goldenrod pollen before the frost knocks them back. Take it easy mama nature.
In other news: we will be back at Union Square this Saturday!!! First time this year. We’ve got some fun stuff to bring. Hope to see you there. We’ll be doing the Saturday mkt for the rest of the year! Looking forward to it!

Is it safe yet?

Bout ten years ago every other brewery decided to make hopped cider. Usually it was used to enhance (mask!) crappy weak cider. Also to try and make cider taste like beer for all the craft brew bros.
The cider community (myself included) got a major attitude about it and refused to do it. Now, 10 years later, I hope we can just look at the potential for a pretty natural and cool flavor blend!
These are just picked chinook hops from our own vines wet hopping a small tank of Northern Spy cider. In about a month we’ll bring it to the markets in 16oz mugjars. I think we’ll call it “Get Over It!”
