Growing Seeds Farm
Pasture Raised Pork, Lamb and Chicken

As Fall is fully here, it is time to harvest all that was grown this season. Our piglets are big hogs now, still joyful and playful, but full grown. Our leaping lambs are of size as well. We raised 800 broiler chickens this year, a new record for us. The warm Spring season gave us a jump start to a productive year, and now YOU have the chance to bring the fruits of the farm home, for your Fall and Winter feasts.

All our animals are raised on Pasture with supplemental grains and scraps. We use Gartner’s Meat as a processor.

Whole Chickens @ $4 per lb
Whole/half Hog $5 per lb hanging weight
Whole/half Lamb $6 per lb hanging weight

Happy New Year from Growing Seeds Farm

Even in the chill of winter we are wrestling around the farm finishing projects and planning for the coming season. All this work makes us pretty hungry*

Pictures:
Kyrie and wwoofer Chris balance on rafters to construct the loft on the cabin
Our laying chickens get taken for a tractor ride to new fresh ground
Pigs get new ground too to root around in (or nap on)
Lambs enjoy a party around the water cooler

With all this activity we still take time for rest and reflection. The six of us farmers and wwoofers enjoyed a lovely meal out last week. As we celebrated the work done we said bon voyage to one helper and welcome back to two more!

* You hungry too? From our farm to your freezer we are offering whole and half lambs and pigs. Ready for pick up at the end of January or beginning of February. Ensure a future full of hearty meals, reserve yours today!

Cheers!

Winter Harvest Boxes went out yesterday, just in time for Thanksgiving. Our purple globe top turnips survived the freezing temperatures last week due to an insulating layer of oat straw.

A Farm update from Jeremy.
The last week or so here at Growing Seeds has been pretty hectic, weather-wise: there've been barn-rattling winds, a considerable drop in temperature, and even a day of light snowfall. It's a bit disorienting when loss of feeling in the hands and feet is the norm, and after-work activities for us Wwoofers have been mostly limited to the confines of the barn, resulting in overly competitive pingpong matches and occasional card games and a kind of manic, sprawling conversational style that the writer of this post assumes an outsider would have a tough time understanding.

The animals have had to make a bit of an adjustment as well -- the piglets all huddle together beneath the roof of their house, cuddling into one big lumpy mass of not-quite uniform color, their floppy ears the most immediate sign of each pig's individual self; the turkeys, on the other hand, have remained locked in their bleak consistency of behavior, seemingly unaware of the environmental changes, even when coated in ice. (Weird digression: it is almost impossible to imagine turkeys luxuriating in more agreeable environments -- lounging on a beach while sipping a pina colada, for instance -- whereas it is easy and often pleasant to imagine other animals taking pleasure in activities we humans enjoy (e.g., the polar bear who delights in an ice-cold Coke, or even the camel who smokes a cigarette and feels the need to overemphasize his masculinity). It's tough to anthropomorphize turkeys; they seem very alien.) The casual grandeur of the llamas persists, unsurprisingly.

Anyway, luckily in the last couple of days the weather has gotten better, the temperature hovering somewhere in the mid-forties with a couple hours of dull, dreary rain each day. But the grim beauty of winter is definitely here, which is nice, if you can find the beauty in grimness.
