My hens left before last winter did, but not before leaving me a parting gift in their run. A feral one.

So when those big beautiful green leaves unfurled from nowhere, what did I do? Absolutely nothing. I let it live its best life, free will and all.

My logic: if it's confident enough to climb the walls and break into the coop uninvited, it can handle itself. No water, no pruning, no fertilizer. Nothing. I basically ghosted this plant.

And yet. Despite my full commitment to doing nothing, it thrived, gave me winter squash AND a few bonus fall decorations.

Do I know what franken-variety it is? Not a clue. Did it ask my permission to grow here? Also no.

The mound bed has grown some fabulous wild weeds this year. Some where beyond that are some onions and potatoes. The strawberries are in there, too.

And have a look at this wild squash from a seed that the chickens left last fall. Now, the chickens are long gone but this monstrosity remains. I can't wait to find out what kind it is.

Sometimes the biggest business decision is knowing when to pivot.

After a lot of thought, I’ve decided I won’t be running the mushroom grow-op this season.

This wasn’t an easy decision.

Growing specialty mushrooms, building a market business, showing up in all kinds of weather, learning production systems, pricing, packaging, booth setup, inventory headaches, and all the thousand tiny things nobody sees behind the scenes taught me a lot.

Some lessons were exciting.
Some were expensive.
A few were the kind you only learn the hard way.

And honestly? I realized I have just as much passion for helping other small makers, growers, homesteaders, and handmade business owners avoid those same mistakes as I do making the products myself.

So while I’m stepping away from production for now, I’m not disappearing.

Savory Dutch baby + cast iron skillet = match made in heaven. Here I added fresh green onions and baked it at 425° in a preheated, buttered skillet.
Then I added chopped ham & Swiss cheese and finished it in the oven. Perfect main course for two.
