Beef prices are surging as America's cattle herd falls to its smallest level in 75 years, and relief could still be years away.

The U.S. entered 2026 with about 86.2 million cattle and calves, down more than 8 million from 2019, as years of drought forced ranchers to shrink their herds. Choice beef prices have jumped roughly 23% since August 2024.

Experts say rebuilding the nation's cattle supply takes time, meaning consumers could continue feeling the squeeze at the grocery store for years.

BREAKING NEWS

Developing now, USDA says that a case of New World Screwworm may have been detected in South Texas.

The sample is now at USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa for confirmatory testing. USDA has activated personnel on the ground and is working with local partners.

The department did not give any details about where the parasite was found, but Reuters is reporting that samples were taken from two calves on the same ranch in La Pryor, Texas, which is about 50 miles from the Mexican border.
