Burnham Family Farm Local, Sustainable, Environmentally Friendly We live on a small 10 acre farm in Orion and raise hogs, chickens, lambs, and bees.

Our Goal
Burnham Family Farm strives to produce pasture-raised poultry and lamb the "old-fashioned way", using heritage breeds that are allowed to free range from sun up to sun down and supplemented with all natural feed (USDA Organic). We strive to uphold our family land ethic while providing our two sons a wonderful place to grow up in, and raising healthy local foods the "right way" for frien

ds and family. All are raised to USDA organic standards (although the farm is not certified). We have a family land ethic of caring for the land as best we can in an environmentally sustainable manner. We use rotational grazing for our lambs and chickens, and we use fire and limited mowing only for w**d control and grass management. The pastures are fertilized only by our animals. Our land ethic also includes using natural resources wisely. We get the majority of our power from an 8 Kw solar panel system and eggs are occasionally delivered to local retailers via electric car. We capture rainwater for watering the garden, and have water saving devices for watering our animals. About Our Eggs and Chickens
We have 100+ chickens that are all pasture raised. This means that they have free access to roam on multiple acres of grass pasture foraging on insects and vegetation (supplemented by USDA certified and locally-milled grain). Our eggs are thus higher in natural healthy Omega-3 fatty acids than conventionally raised eggs. Pasture-raising means that our farm provides over 1500 square feet of rotated pasture per bird (excluding winter). (The industry standard for pastured raised is 108 square feet and factory-farmed caged hens are only allowed 67 square inches.) We think pasture-raising on chemical-free land produces the best tasting eggs and happiest chickens. We strive to produce the best eggs possible using primarily heritage breeds of chicken. Our chickens are antibiotic, growth hormone and GMO-free. We are a member of The Livestock Conservancy supporting heritage breeds.

Are you starting to think about summer gardening yet? Would you like to try some sunflowers? Our sunflowers were VERY productive last year and we saved the seeds. I don’t have the variety name available, but these grow very tall and have very large heads. The birds loved these during the fall and the heads we left out in the winter were a treat for them too.

24-26 seeds for only $2. They will be posted to our order form very soon.

Here is something new we’re trying. We had quite a few extra eggs this week, so we mixed them and freeze dried them raw. A quick spin in the blender turned the dried eggs into powder. These should last many, many years and are a “just in case” egg need situation for our family.

Have any of you tried something like this and what was your experience using egg powder? We’re curious!
