Farm life isn’t a slow lifestyle. It’s a full life that asks you to slow down enough to actually live it.

Here’s the reality. Homesteads keep you busy. Your days are not whimsical and slow. BUT they are purposeful and rewarding.

•The cows don’t care if you slept terribly.
The chickens aren’t waiting for you to finish your coffee.
•The garden doesn’t w**d or preserve itself.
•The milk still needs processing
•Dinner still needs making
•And there’s always something that needs fixing.

And just when you think you might sit down for five minutes, the dogs are climbing all over you in the hammock.

So why do we call it a slow lifestyle?

I think it’s because we’re trading the hurry of modern life for a life that feels more connected to what matters. Growing food, raising animals, learning old-fashioned skills, and building a home that provides for your family.

The work is constant, but there’s a rhythm to it. A purpose behind it. And a kind of satisfaction that comes from seeing the fruits of your labor, literally and figuratively.

It’s not about doing less. It’s about living differently.

And if you ask me, that’s worth a few less hammock naps.

Meet Maple 🌿🐮

When you can’t decide, ask your people!

You helped us name this sweet girl, and I can’t thank you enough for the love and excitement you’ve shown her. She’s been welcomed into our little homestead with more love than any calf could ask for, and it’s been so fun sharing her first days with you.

I’ll keep sharing Maple’s story as she grows, so you can watch right along with us.

But there’s a part of farm life I want to be honest about, too.

These babies don’t stay babies forever. Eventually, they grow up to help feed our family, or they move on to another farm where they’ll help feed someone else’s.

I know that’s not what everyone wants to hear, and I understand that. But I also want you to see that raising animals for food doesn’t mean they aren’t loved. Maple will be loved, cared for, and given the best life we can give her for as long as she’s here.

That’s farm life. And it’s a part of our story I’ll continue to share with you. 🤎

If you’re new here, hi. I’m Shelly. 👋🏻

I’m a homesteader, homeschool mom, homemaker, chef, baker, and food preserver living on a little piece of land in Northern California with my husband, three boys, and a whole lot of animals.

Around here, we milk cows, gather eggs, grow food, bake sourdough, make butter and cheese, preserve what we grow, run a farm stand, homeschool the kids, cook most of our food from scratch, and somehow still find plenty of time for the things that weren’t on the list.

I’m not interested in creating a picture-perfect homestead.

I’m interested in creating a full life.

A life where my kids know how to grow food, cook a meal, care for animals, preserve the harvest, fix things, work hard, think for themselves, and actually know how to live.

I believe homesteading doesn’t have to mean doing everything the hardest possible way.

I’m all about taking the old-fashioned skills and making them practical enough to fit into real life.

SHE’S HERE!

My 24-hour prediction was right.

Willow calved within 24 hours of my last update, and everything went beautifully for both mama and baby.

The calf was up and bouncing around within an hour, nursed her colostrum, and got plenty of snuggles from us.

Mama got electrolytes and alfalfa, we were able to milk her that evening, and got some CMPK into her for an extra nutrient boost.

Isn’t she the cutest?

Now we need a name!

Impatiently waiting on a very important arrival… 🐄🤎

My guess? Within the next 24 hours.

This will be Willow’s 3rd calf with us and her 4th calf in total, so you’d think I’d be used to this by now.

I’m not. 😂

There’s just something about waiting on a new calf that never gets old. The anticipation, checking on her a million times a day, wondering if this is it…

And then suddenly, there’s a brand-new little face standing in the pasture. 🥹

We typically pick a naming theme for the year, but this year has been a little wild. Between the kitchen remodel last spring and, well… life, our other calf never even got an official name.

We just call her Moo Moo.

I know. Real creative. 🤪

So this time, I’m making sure we actually name the baby.

Now we wait… 🐄🍼🤎
