☕ Coffee & Café Series #3

Bop’s Coffee & Co. | Kouts, Indiana

Located in the heart of downtown Kouts, Bop’s Coffee & Co. is the kind of neighborhood coffee shop that immediately makes you feel welcome. Bright, inviting, and full of personality, the café strikes a perfect balance between modern charm and cozy comfort. From the vintage-inspired tin ceilings and sage green beadboard walls to the beautiful floral accent wall that perfectly matches the front entrance, every detail feels thoughtfully designed. Despite its boutique feel, the café is surprisingly spacious, with plenty of room to relax, work, or catch up with friends. A large outdoor patio and kid-friendly atmosphere make it an even more enjoyable place to spend an afternoon🍽️

As a locally owned, woman-owned business, Bop’s has also become an important part of the Kouts community. When tornadoes impacted the area, the café stepped up by providing more than 200 free meals to residents who had been displaced or left without power—a reflection of the kind of business they strive to be.

For this visit, we ordered ☕️two large cold brews, each priced at $6.25, which felt like a fair value for handcrafted specialty coffee.

The traditional cold brew offered a smooth, earthy flavor that was enjoyable and refreshing, though we would have liked to see a slightly stronger coffee profile. Our second drink featured house-made lavender syrup with vanilla and oat milk.🪻The lavender syrup was excellent, adding a pleasant floral note without becoming overpowering. While the oat milk masked the coffee more than we personally prefer, that seemed more like a matter of our chosen combination than the drink itself. We’d gladly order it again with a different milk or flavor pairing.

One detail we especially appreciated was Bop’s commitment to quality ingredients. Most of their syrups are made in-house, and those they source come from a small supplier that avoids artificial dyes and high-fructose corn syrup—something we always appreciate seeing.

The service was easily one of the highlights of our visit. The two baristas were genuinely warm, personable, and welcoming, making conversation while preparing our drinks in under five minutes. Their hospitality, combined with the café’s family-friendly atmosphere, made the experience feel personal rather than transactional💫

While Bop’s may not be chasing the ultra-specialty coffee scene, it excels at creating something just as valuable: a welcoming community coffee shop with beautiful surroundings, quality drinks, exceptional service, and fair prices. It’s the kind of place that becomes part of a community’s daily routine—and one we’ll happily return to.

🍺 Brewery Series #1

Blockhead Beerworks | Valparaiso, Indiana

Located just off the historic Valparaiso Square, Blockhead Beerworks is more than just a brewery—it’s a self-described brewstillery, producing its own craft beers while also distilling spirits in-house. Combined with a creative Asian fusion menu, it offers an experience that’s unlike anything else in downtown Valparaiso‼️

The space blends modern industrial design with artistic flair. Colorful murals, exposed ceilings, and a lively bar create an energetic atmosphere, while the spacious dog-friendly patio provides a quieter place to relax with overhead fans, TVs, and plenty of seating. Although the dining room can get a bit loud during busy evenings, that’s simply part of the atmosphere at a place that’s clearly become a local favorite.

For this visit, we ordered the Wok the Line lo mein, Hail to the King sushi roll, Crab Rangoon Potstickers, and sampled two of their house-made beers: the Blood Orange Wheat and Raspberry Lemonade Sour.

The clear standout of the meal was the Crab Rangoon Potstickers🦀 Made in-house, they were packed with crab, cream cheese, and scallions before being topped with unagi sauce, spicy mayo, and sesame. The combination of creamy, savory, slightly sweet flavors with just the right amount of heat created one of the most unique appetizers we’ve had in quite some time. They were incredibly flavorful, surprisingly filling, and something we’d happily order again.

The Wok the Line🍲 offered generous portions of tender ribeye, fresh vegetables, and a well-balanced teriyaki sauce. While the lo mein noodles themselves didn’t appear to be made in-house, they were still good quality and complemented the dish well. The Hail to the King sushi roll🍣 was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Our only criticism was that the portion felt a little small, but the quality certainly wasn’t lacking.

Since this is, after all, a brewstillery, we couldn’t leave without trying a couple of their house-made beers🍻 The Blood Orange Wheat, an American Pale Wheat Beer, was crisp, refreshing, and easy to drink with subtle citrus notes. Our favorite, however, was the Raspberry Lemonade Sour, a Berliner Weisse that perfectly balanced bright raspberry flavor with a refreshing tartness that never became overpowering. Even if sour beers aren’t usually your style, this one is worth trying.

Service was excellent throughout the evening. Despite a busy dinner crowd, we were seated quickly, and our server was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Even while dining on the patio, she checked on us regularly without ever feeling intrusive.

At roughly $65 before tip for three dishes and two house-made craft beers, we felt the value was fair considering the quality of the food, the downtown location, and the overall experience.

Blockhead Beerworks successfully proves that brewery food doesn’t have to be ordinary. With creative Asian fusion cuisine, an impressive selection of house-made beers, and a fun atmosphere, it’s an easy place to recommend whether you’re stopping in for dinner, meeting friends after work, or spending an evening on the Valparaiso Square.

☕ Coffee & Café Series #2

Alley Side Café & Baked Treats | Knox, Indiana

Located on the historic Knox Square across from the beautiful Starke County Courthouse, Alley Side Café & Baked Treats is the kind of small-town café that reminds you why locally owned businesses continue to be the heart of communities like Knox.

Housed inside a beautifully restored former law office, the café blends historic character with modern charm. From the colorful flowers lining the storefront to the exposed brick, vintage ceilings, and thoughtfully chosen décor inside, every detail feels intentional. The space is small, but it's warm, inviting, and makes excellent use of every square foot.

What truly sets Alley Side apart is its commitment to making food the old-fashioned way. Nearly everything is made from scratch, and whenever possible they source ingredients locally—including eggs, honey, tomatoes, cucumbers, sausage, and other seasonal products. Fresh scones are baked daily, the bakery case is filled with homemade treats, and you can genuinely taste the difference that quality ingredients make.

For this visit, we ordered the Campfire Chicken Panini, Caprese Panini, Toasted Marshmallow Iced Latte with house-made cold foam, and Scratch Nanner's Banana Pudding.

The coffee was the standout of the meal. Using locally roasted beans that are ground fresh for each drink creates a noticeably richer flavor, while the house-made toasted marshmallow cold foam added another layer of sweetness without overpowering the espresso. It's one of the better specialty lattes we've had in the region.

Both paninis arrived fresh in about ten minutes and were satisfying lunch portions. While the bread itself isn't baked in-house, everything inside tasted fresh and well prepared. The Campfire Chicken Panini offered smoky, savory flavors, while the Caprese was light, fresh, and perfectly balanced.

Then came the dessert…

The Scratch Nanner's Banana Pudding is absolutely worth the trip on its own! Made entirely from scratch with real ingredients and no artificial shortcuts, it's rich, creamy, and incredibly fresh without being overly sweet. It regularly sells out, and after one bite, it's easy to understand why.

The service was equally impressive. We arrived just 15–20 minutes before closing, expecting to feel rushed. Instead, the two ladies working welcomed us with genuine kindness, prepared everything quickly, answered our questions, and encouraged us to enjoy our meal without ever making us feel like an inconvenience. That kind of hospitality is becoming harder to find and deserves recognition. It's the kind of service that makes you want to come back just as much as the food does.

If there's one drawback, it's simply the size of the café. During busy breakfast or lunch hours, the ordering area can become a bit congested. Fortunately, the welcoming atmosphere and excellent takeout options make this a very minor issue.

At $37 for two paninis, a specialty latte, and a homemade dessert, we felt the value was fair considering the amount of homemade food, locally sourced ingredients, and overall quality.

☕ Coffee & Café Series #1

Blackbird Cafe | Valparaiso, Indiana

Located in the heart of downtown Valparaiso, Blackbird Café has become a local favorite for coffee lovers, students, remote workers, and anyone looking for a cozy place to slow down for a while.

After one visit, it’s easy to understand why.

What immediately stands out is the creativity of the menu. Blackbird goes well beyond traditional coffee offerings with an extensive selection of teas, specialty drinks, and house-made flavor combinations that make choosing what to order surprisingly difficult.

For this visit, I tried the Dragonfruit Lemonade with Natural Energy Syrup and the Iced Cherry Blossom Matcha Latte.

The Dragonfruit Lemonade was refreshing, flavorful, and perfect for a warm summer afternoon. The natural energy syrup provided a nice boost without the overly artificial taste that often comes with energy drinks.

The standout, however, was the Cherry Blossom Matcha Latte. The combination of vanilla matcha and cherry cold foam was unique, balanced, and genuinely memorable. It’s the kind of drink that makes you want to come back just to order it again.

To sample the food side of the menu, I ordered a house-made bagel with vegetable cream cheese and a slice of tiramisu.

The bagel wasn’t fresh from the oven, but it still had the texture and character of something made in-house rather than mass-produced. The vegetable cream cheese was excellent and packed with flavor. The tiramisu was equally impressive—rich and satisfying without being overly sweet.

The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. Large front windows overlooking the Valparaiso Square, plenty of drink and pastry options, and comfortable seating make it a great place to meet a friend, study, work remotely, or simply enjoy a quiet afternoon.

My only criticism is that the café can feel somewhat narrow near the ordering counter during busy periods, creating a little congestion when lines form.

Still, that’s a small complaint in an otherwise enjoyable experience.

Whether you’re looking for a place to study, catch up with friends, or discover your next favorite drink, Blackbird Café is well worth a stop.
