There’s something special about a gentle Montana rain. The smell of fresh pine, the sound of raindrops on the leaves, the gravel road glistening, and the whole ranch slowing down for a moment.

Days like this are a reminder that not every beautiful day comes with sunshine.

The clouds are rolling through the canyon.
The geese are out stretching their legs, the wood ducks are making their rounds, and the turkeys have decided today is apparently parade day. Even the deer showed up for the morning meeting.

Storm clouds rolling over the canyon, water moving through the ditch, and then one of the ranch’s quiet night shift supervisors makes an appearance. 🦉

We’ve been spotting this gray owl around the irrigation ditches lately, and it’s always a treat when they decide to stick around long enough for a visit. One second perfectly hidden… the next airborne and disappearing back into the trees like a ghost. Mother Nature always knows how to steal the show around here.

One of the best parts of ranch life is you never quite know what’s waiting around the next corner.

Sometimes Mother Nature reminds you what really matters.

Yesterday’s storm rolled through the ranch with heavy wind, rain, dark skies, and then… this happened. The rainbow hung out for nearly an hour and the colors were unbelievably bright. One of those moments where everything simply stops for a second.

People in real estate always talk about “curb appeal.”
And sure… curb appeal matters.

But after standing in this doorway watching this view for more than 30 years, I’ve realized something else matters a whole lot more: what you experience once you’re actually here.

Every window at Fred Burr Canyon Ranch seems to tell a different story depending on the weather, the season, the wildlife, the light, or the sky. Yesterday, Mother Nature decided to show off a little.

And honestly… we were perfectly okay with that. 🌈

Spring in the Bitterroot hits a little different. 🌿☀️

Spent part of the day walking the ranch, checking irrigation flow, opening gates, and making sure the water is getting where it needs to go. One of the best parts of ranch life is slowing down for a second and realizing this is the “office” for the day.

The trees are waking up, the grass is turning deep green, the ponds are filling, and the mountains still have a little reminder of winter hanging on in the distance. Hard to beat a spring view like this. 🌲🏔️💧

Well… the radiant heat pump decided it needed a break. No hot water at the main house for a bit. Thankfully, nothing a quick jaunt down to the cabin for a shower couldn’t solve. That’s just Montana ranch life sometimes. 😂

Huge thank you to McLaren HVAC out of Victor for jumping in and getting things handled quickly. The amazing part? They actually had the parts in stock and were ready to go. That matters out here.
