My husband, Dean, made a video of how his Quail cage is set up.
Meet his Jumbo White Coturnix Quail project
These little birds may be small, but they are mighty useful on the farm! Jumbo White Coturnix are fast-growing, productive quail known for their beautiful white feathers, calm nature, and excellent purpose as both egg and meat birds. Jumbo White Coturnix Quail are basically the “big white meat birds” of the Coturnix quail world. They are Coturnix japonica, the same species as regular Coturnix quail, but bred larger and with mostly white plumage. People often call them Jumbo Whites, Texas A&M quail, or White Coturnix, though not every white bird is truly jumbo.
They are one of the easiest small livestock animals to raise, making them a wonderful choice for homesteads, backyard farms, and anyone interested in raising their own food on a smaller scale.
Coturnix quail mature quickly, start laying young, and don’t require a huge amount of space. Their eggs are tiny little treasures, rich and delicious, and the birds themselves are a great option for sustainable farm-raised meat.
We are excited to be adding Jumbo White Coturnix Quail here at Millbjörn Farm and learning more as we go. Dean has been working on their setup, including an 8x8 hoop coop for his local blood line , and we are still deciding what bedding will work best for the ground.
We would love to hear from others who raise quail! What bedding has worked best for you in a ground pen or hoop coop setup?
Coming soon, we hope to offer Jumbo White Coturnix quail, eggs, and meat from our farm!
