There aren’t many better ways to start off a playoff football Sunday than getting a steak sandwich from Dominic’s of New York. I’ve been eating there for over 20 years. The place hasn’t changed a thing. It is just a flavor that nobody else has. The aroma coming off the griddle will make anybody salivate. I went with the regular cheesesteak extra meat, extra Dominic’s seasoning, onions, cheese, and mayo. It’s not fancy, but it’s always a good choice. These guys break the meat sweats scale.

Back by popular demand Santo’s Eats is up and running. These are some NOLA special oysters. They were the best I’ve ever had. They poured the sauce over some good bread too. Never had any better. Oceana’s in the French Quarter.

I was recommended to this little sub shop by a coworker. The Sub Bag is a locally owned sandwich shop off of Princess Anne Rd in Norfolk across from the industrial park. I ordered the Cuban sandwich. It wasn’t the most authentic Cuban I be ever had, but it was packed with delicious pork, ham, and cheese. I tried this rather odd champagne Kola that they had on a whim. It tasted like cheap perfume in a can. Would not recommend the Kola, but I would recommend The Sub Bag if you are looking for a good lunch spot on that side of town. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5 on the meat sweats scale.

Back after a brief hiatus, I went down to Chicks Oyster Bar today. This place needs no introduction. We’ve all been there, but I’ve got to give them props on the amazing oysters Rockefeller. They are the best in town in my opinion. There are other places where you can get good ones for sure, but these are on point. There isn’t really a better way to get your daily spinach intake. 5 out of 5 on the meat sweats scale.

Today I decided to try out Los Cuates Taqueria on Newtown Road. This place is what Santo’s Eats is all about. Owned by a couple from Texas, this place does not pander to American taste buds on the menus or the plate. This is as authentic as Mexican cuisine gets. They have drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) that you only find in truly authentic Mexican places. The salsa was a different color and texture than the usual tomato paste you usually get. They bring out house made hot red and green sauce for your meal. I ordered the bacon wrapped colossal shrimp. These bad boys were huge. The picture doesn’t do them justice. The homemade dipping sauce was a great addition to the plate. The rice was fantastic and very authentic. The beans were also good and they had huge chunks of bacon added to them. I couldn’t finish all the shrimp as the portions were so big, in fact all the other plates I saw come out had massive portions too. I recommend you check this place out. I’m going to give it the 5 out of 5 on the Meat Sweats scale. Much like the guy on the sign you are going to need a siesta after you leave.

Special work day edition of Santo’s Eats: We ordered Dodge’s Chicken from Hampton Blvd. in Norfolk. Delicious crunchy spicy wings that were breaded to perfection. Maybe the most tender drums I’ve ever had. They are open 24/7 and on DoorDash so if you need some good chicken anytime I would highly recommend. I haven’t had their chicken since about 2006 and it was just as good, if not better, than I remembered. This one is getting the 5 out of 5 on the work day Meat Sweats scale.

So today’s post is about a little place down the street called Harold’s Family Grill and Bar on VB Blvd. I was greeted by who I assume is the owner and was seated. I decided to try a personal pan pizza because I’ve heard that they have a good pizza here. The pizza pictured is my pepperoni and cheese personal pizza. Smelled good, piping hot, and didn’t take too long to come out. The crust had a great texture and you can tell they are using good quality cheese. Unfortunately, this is where the accolades stop. I have no idea what happened, but it tasted like someone dumped an entire shaker of salt in this thing. It has to be an accident because I can’t imagine this is how the pizza was supposed to taste. The service was good and this is definitely a local family place so I want to chalk this up as a mistake. It’s been about 30 minutes since I tasted it and still have a salt taste in my mouth. I hate to do this, but 0 out of 5 on the Meat Sweats scale. Not sure after all that sodium I’ll be sweating for the next few days.

Today's post is about an Italian restaurant in Virginia Beach off of Laskin Rd. called La Bella Italia. La Bella's has been there as long as I can recall. It is a nice quite Italian place that also has a little market attached to it. The food was fantastic. We started with a charcuterie board that was a great mix of Italian meats and cheeses. I tried the pan seared duck with a cherry gravy over a cauliflower mash cooked medium rare (chef's recommendation). The duck was amazing with great smokey flavor and it was very rich. The other dish shown was a seafood fusilli pasta with a vodka sauce. This was also a great dish. They didn't try to do too much with it, just really fresh ingredients and kept it simple. The service was also great from start to finish. I would definitely recommend this place and the price was very reasonable for quality of food and service.

Today I went to one of my favorite lunch spots Hot Diggity Dogs BBQ on Newtown Rd between I-264 and VB Blvd. They have successfully brought back the Norfolk Dog. The Norfolk Dog consists of a natural casing dog (for the snap), chili, mustard, and onions which people would call "all the way." I prefer mine with just chili and a few dabs of Texas Pete. The owners have reverse engineered an old unique chili recipe from Tony's Original Hot Dogs on Lafayette Blvd, Norfolk. The chili is finely ground and has a unique dry texture, but anyone who remembers the old dog places in Norfolk will love this dog. They've done a great job of bringing back a local treat that many people, including me, thought was lost to time. I have also had a chance to sample the NC pulled pork BBQ. While I did find it to be very good, this place is all about the Norfolk Dog to me. I can get NC BBQ anywhere. I can only get a proper Norfolk Dog here. The service is always great as well so I don't want to leave that part out. I give it a 5 out of 5 on the Meat Sweats scale.

Thank you guys and gals for all of the support. I’m going to try and post something new every Tuesday on my day off. I love checking out new places on my day off. I’ll never rip a local place because I know it’s hard. I may make suggestions though.
