We had a great time in Fremont, Ohio today at the Fremont Pigeon Club’s Young Bird Show! I only took one bird, but that’s all you need. This homebred White English Barb Young Cock won Best of Breed, Best Wattle Breed, and Reserve Champion Rare Breed!! I also got to judge most of the Rare Breeds meet for a judging practice for my certification in Louisville, Kentucky next month. Over 50 birds were entered and it was quite challenging with some breeds I’m not familiar with. I hope everyone is having a great breeding season!

Michigan poultry farm fire

Our thoughts and prayers go out to these fellow members in the poultry industry. We are glad no people were hurt in the fire. Unfortunately many birds were lost.

A massive fire tore through one of the largest Michigan egg producing farms.

Having raised other poultry for many years, last year I decided to try my hand in pigeons. And I can honestly say that was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I’m absolutely in love with all of my pigeons (even if I might have a little too many) and I have already come pretty far within the hobby. Having gotten a BIS at the Hartford City Show with a brown Bar Mookee, Champion Pigeon at my last county fair with a black Old German Magpie Tumbler Hen, and getting a RIS yesterday at the Indiana Pigeon Club Young Bird Lawn Show with a black Toy Modena Cock! Plus multiple Best of Breeds and many Honors. Within this hobby I have met so many amazing people and I can’t see where else I go with my birds. Just one more show in Bay City, Michigan then off to Nationals in Louisville!

We have been trying for a long time to get ahold of good quality breeding stock of these turkeys. It's a shame that such a beautiful breed is classified as Critical.

Beltsville Small White Turkey – Critically Endangered
The USDA research center at Beltsville, MD began a breeding program between 1934 and 1941 to create a bird that would answer the consumer demand for a bird that would fit apartment sized refrigerators, small ovens, and small families. Researchers developed the new Beltsville Small White variety from a genetic foundation that included the White Holland, White Austrian, Narragansett, Bronze, and Wild Turkey. However, market trends changed in favor of large birds, and the Beltsville Small White was nearly extinct by the 1970s. #HeritageBreedsWeek Learn more here: https://livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/beltsville

Some American Farm Animals Becoming Less Endangered

Here at the Homestead & Exotics, we strive to promote and preserve rare livestock breeds. We are excited to hear that some breeds have changed statuses or have a large enough population not to be classified anymore!
