Grow. Learn. Preserve.

Many thanks to my mother-in-law that is willing to take time out of her day to not only help me learn how to preserve a harvest, but to preserve the technique and tradition of canning.

Pro tip: If summers are packed full for you and your family, tossing veggies that are at peak ripeness into the freezer can hold them until you’re ready to make things like soups and salsas.

Have you ever tried canning? How’d it go? What’s your go-to to can? Have questions? Let me know in the comments 👇🏼

Through March 20, 2026, the USDA Farm Service Agency will be accepting offers for the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program. will be accepting offers for the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program. For this fiscal year, which ends September 30, only 1.9 million acres are available for all CRP enrollments, so it’s likely to be a competitive year.

Continuous CRP participants voluntarily offer environmentally sensitive lands, typically smaller parcels than offered through General CRP, including wetlands, riparian buffers, and varying wildlife habitats. In return, they receive annual rental payments and cost-share assistance to establish long-term, resource-conserving vegetative cover. I’m excited to share that I’m a published photographer!

Aside from my undergradute work in the collage magazine (more on that another time) this is the first time I’ve had a photo published. It may not be one of my most prized photos, but suppose I’ll take the title none the less. 😊

I snapped this photo over a year ago and posted it asking for advice after my ladies were being inundated with ants.

It was actually pretty incredible to experience. The ladies (and a few gentlemen) seemed relatively unbothered by the ants. However, I wanted to give them the happiest, pest free home that I could.

After about a week of research and a visit to the store for cinnamon, the ants were nearly gone by the time I got back out for a hive check. I quite honestly was appalled. I decided not to put any cinnamon down, and let the hive do their thing. Sure enough, the ants were no longer trying to take up residence after a short period of time. Nature is incredible.

Thank you Chari Elam and Blake Shook at The Bee Supply for kindly requesting to use the photo and for sharing a copy of the book: The Golden Rules of Beekeeping.

Every migration season, Monarchs travel thousands of miles—yet their survival depends on what we grow in our own backyards.

This planting plan brings together nectar-rich blooms and host plants like milkweed to feed caterpillars and butterflies alike. Add in coneflowers, blazing star, bergamot, and black-eyed susan—and you’ve created a living refueling station.

✨ One patch of native plants can make your garden part of a life-saving network for pollinators.

As expected, there was so much knowledge and inspiration gained from The Homestead Festival! I’m still digesting it all and will need a while to compile notes to share, but here’s a few highlights. 🤩
