Last night Donny set an alarm on his phone to get up at midnight to bale (fourth straight night in a row). When his phone alarm went off this time, he attempted to snooze it but groggily thought it was his old school alarm clock (which he hasn’t used in YEARS!). His phone alarm is sounding loudly and now his old school radio music is blaring and he’s just not awake enough to silence either. I convince him it is coming from his phone alarm and he eventually got both turned off. He snoozed a few times and ended up driving to the field at 1 am but it was too late to bale with a heavy a dew settled in by then.

Baling 2-string bales (AKA misery bales) is not for the faint of heart. No matter how much time, effort, and worry he puts into it, it can easily be undone by rain, wind, too much dew, not enough dew, dew at the wrong time, wind at the wrong time, gophers digging holes that breach the ditch bank, breakdowns, and just fatigue. And it’s only first cutting.

If you fed a horse, goat, sheep, or cattle hay today—don’t forget to thank a farmer.

Donny got the Pd Naturally herd bulls turned into spring pasture yesterday. Now they just have to wait a week or two for their gals. Calving season into breeding season into haying season circus continues.
