I didn’t do the best job at protecting my peace today. I spent from 8-4 going through invoices line by line, adjusting prices, watching things creep up. Being a small business owner right now is a bit scary, honestly. People are hurting, but at least Chickadee offers some opportunities to connect, with pets, with nature, with community.

A customer came in and began making remarks to Ranni (who is a 14 year old) about prices. This was followed by saying loudly to me, still trapped in front of the computer screen, that I need to ‘lower your prices!’ After spending 8 hours reviewing increasing prices, it was a little more than I could handle.

I went to the counter, rattled, and said ‘Excuse me?’ But my peace was already stolen from me. It’s now 7pm and I’m still trying to reel it in.

My daughter handed me some peace back when she suggested we go to Target and scream about the prices and demand they lower them immediately. 😂.

Everyone is struggling through high prices. It’s not an easy time right now, but I can tell you that no one is getting rich peddling pet food and bird seed at a local store right now. Small businesses are putting one foot in front of the other as people are forced to cut back on ‘extras.’ I can also tell you that disrespecting the employees and shopkeepers is no solution. Making demands. Snide remarks.

The wonderful ending to this day is my knowing that for this one person, I have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of kind, sweet, loving customers. Ahhh. There it is. My peace.

Hey friends. As we head into fall, and we start to have some bon fires and burn leaves, just a reminder to NEVER, EVER add gasoline to a fire. I saw a friend today that had been MIA for several months. He sustained burns over 65% of his body. Spent months in an induced coma. My heart absolutely sank. This kind, beautiful man, in an instant. Life changer. I know we never think it will happen to us, but think again. Be careful. 💚. I love you A. It was so good to see you today.
