This life sure asks a lot of us, doesn’t it?
We have been feverishly nursing a first time heifer back to health, hoping and praying she can walk again.
What it takes out of a rancher to tend to this kind of ”downer cow”, very few understand.
Her birth was traumatic. (Calf was massive).
The nerves that affect her ability to stand were impacted.
She is medicated (steroid and pain).
We are offering food and water regularly.
We are moving her multiple times a day.
We are praying that she pulls through.
We are on day 4.

We surrender her life and even her death to the God that made her.
We will not stop until she does.

This is why we put our cows in a pasture without a pond during freezing temperatures. They drink from a tank filled with well water, connected to an auto waterer. It’s one of my biggest fears… cows falling in and drowning.

We have three livestock guardian dogs, and I didnt realize how vulnerable they were… until now.

I looked at Husker’s GPS collar one night and saw that he was in the middle of a pond!
We suited up, got flashlights, and drove over to find him headed towards us.

What a relief!

The next morning, I went out to check to see if I could tell where he really went.

Our dogs are officially off duty until the ponds melt.

The list was long, but over the last week, we knocked it out. We’ve officially done all we can do.

✔️ Feed store: creep, cattle cubes, chicken scratch, chicken feed, straw, and salt blocks
✔️ Ace hardware for hoses and auto waterers
✔️ Medicate sick calf
✔️ Install freeze misers (herd + growers)
✔️ Cake cows
✔️ Hay cows
✔️ Move cows to winter pasture
✔️ Check for babies
✔️ Put out protein barrels and salt licks
✔️ Check grower feed/order
✔️ Order cattle cubes, mineral, and proten licks
✔️ Antigel in toolcat, tractor, & skid steer
✔️ Fill tanks with gas
✔️ Saw tree limbs in way of water spigot
✔️ Put hay bales in front of water spigot
✔️ Disconnect all water hoses
✔️ Install insulation skirting on mom’s RV
✔️ Fill gaps with dirt for mom’s RV
✔️ Install/check all heat tapes
✔️ Harvest broccoli and cabbage (wash and store)
✔️ Fill new greenhouse with hay bales for easier feed
✔️ Move donkeys to temporary shelter
✔️ Build hay bale lien-to for donkeys, add straw
✔️ Mineral block to donkeys
✔️ Run 10 gal hot water to donkeys
✔️ Enclose lean-to for bottle calf, fill with hay
✔️ Hay bale for 776 w/ water and protein barrel
✔️ Fill 776’s sick calf’s lien-to with hay
✔️ Install water tanks for growers
✔️ Build hay bale wall for growers
✔️ Put hay bales around chicken coop
✔️ Close outdoor chicken run
✔️ Lay straw in chicken coop
✔️ Run 200 ft hot water hose for coral animals
