The Easter bunny left some treats for our bunnies

Looks like the Eater Bunny left some mealworm-filled eggs for the big birds! Grateful for each and every bird, their unique personalities and for the beautiful eggs that keep our family fed.

Our Black Copper Maran hen laid her first chocolate egg! It is nearly as beautiful as she is. Her feathers shimmer a brilliant green and she has cute feathered black legs. Her friend on her right is a Cuckoo Maran and will also lay darker brown eggs. These two are best friends and are rarely seen apart. They watch the sun set up in a pine tree every single night, rain or shine. What wonderful breeds.

🌾 The daily grind can wait. Out here with Buckbeak time slows. Sharing a Cheez-It with my boldest and sweetest hen feels like the perfect reminder to breathe, laugh, and just be. 🐓💛 These are the little pauses that make all the difference. ✨

It was over 100 degrees yesterday, and my Turken chick is loving the heat! Their breed’s naked neck and lighter feathering help them stay cool naturally. ☀️

They might look a little unusual, but Turkens (also called Naked Necks) are hardy, sweet, and decent egg layers. They grow quickly, making them a practical dual-purpose (meat) breed as well. Welcome home, my partially-naked little friend!

This past Sunday some of the hens thought the weather was perfect for a dust bath! This natural process helps improve the chickens' feathers and skin, fights parasites, and builds up our little backyard chicken community. Plus it's lovely to watch. What do you like to do when the sun is shining?

Ginger got a special Mother’s Day treat today — a big juicy chunk of watermelon! True to her mama instincts, she made sure to break it into little pieces for the babies before taking a bite herself. Watching her care for her chicks so gently has been such a joy — she’s a natural. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas out there, feathered or not!
