APD Farm

APD Farm We are trying to heal our land (and our planet) by grazing cattle in nature's image. Our mission is to address climate change through planned grazing of livestock, while producing the highest quality grass-fed beef available.

We are one of thousands of operations around the world doing this work by employing the decision making framework of Holistic Management.

Bay Journal - Article: Cattle farmer uses down-to-earth practices to beef up the soil

“We use the animals as a tool to create soil that can more effectively infiltrate water and cycle atmospheric carbon,” the 34-year-old Rales said as he walked the animals toward their watering trough. “The byproduct of that is healthy, grass-fed beef.”

Thank you Whitney Pipkin and Chesapeake Bay Journal for this articulate piece that highlights how animal agriculture can help roll back the clock on climate change and why we believe “what gets measured gets managed.”

APD Farm Pop-up Market

Friends in DC! We are hosting a pop-up market in Mount Pleasant NEXT TUESDAY 8/21! RSVP below.

Don't miss the opportunity to stock your freezer with regenerative, 100% grass-fed beef.

PLUS we have a special whole cow ground beef offer: 5lb for $30

What’s special about this whole cow ground beef?

**It's a WHOLE lot of flavor. Typically, the tastiest and most popular cuts of beef are reserved for steaks, briskets, etc. But this whole cow blend includes all of the most flavorful cuts in the mix, resulting in a premium quality and delicious ground.

**The whole ground special we are currently offering is from a female Devon cow (a breed known for its marbling and meat quality on a grass-only diet). She was finished in the early summer months grazing high-energy grasses and forages at their nutritional peak, along with deep rooting medicinal herbs rich in trace minerals. Minerals impart flavor and nutrients. You are what you eat, eats!

Opinion | Soil Power! The Dirty Way to a Green Planet

World soil day was yesterday, please take a read.

"People reap more benefit from nature when they give up trying to vanquish it and instead see it clearly, as a demanding but indispensable ally. Because of carbon’s climate change connection, we’ve been conditioned to think of it as the enemy, when in fact it’s as vital to life as water. "

An owl winks in the shadows
A lizard lifts on tiptoe, breathing hard
Young male sparrow stretches up his neck,
big head, watching—

The grasses are working in the sun. Turn it green.
Turn it sweet. That we may eat.
Grow our meat.

Brazil says “sovereign use of Natural Resources”
Thirty thousand kinds of unknown plants.
The living actual people of the jungle
sold and tortured—
And a robot in a suit who peddles a delusion called “Brazil”
can speak for them?

The whales turn and glisten, plunge
and sound and rise again,
Hanging over subtly darkening deeps
Flowing like breathing planets
in the sparkling whorls of
living light—

And Japan quibbles for words on
what kinds of whales they can kill?
A once-great Buddhist nation
dribbles methyl mercury
like gonorrhea
in the sea.

Pere David’s Deer, the Elaphure,
Lived in the tule marshes of the Yellow River
Two thousand years ago—and lost its home to rice—
The forests of Lo-yang were logged and all the silt &
Sand flowed down, and gone, by 1200 AD—
Wild Geese hatched out in Siberia
head south over basins of the Yang, the Huang,
what we call “China”
On flyways they have used a million years.
Ah China, where are the tigers, the wild boars,
the monkeys,
like the snows of yesteryear
Gone in a mist, a flash, and the dry hard ground
Is parking space for fifty thousand trucks.
IS man most precious of all things?
—then let us love him, and his brothers, all those
Fading living beings—

North America, Turtle Island, taken by invaders
who wage war around the world.
May ants, may abalone, otters, wolves and elk
Rise! and pull away their giving
from the robot nations.

Solidarity. The People.
Standing Tree People!
Flying Bird People!
Swimming Sea People!
Four-legged, two-legged people!

How can the head-heavy power-hungry politic scientist
Government two-world Capitalist-Imperialist
Third-world Communist paper-shuffling male
non-farmer jet-set bureaucrats
Speak for the green of the leaf? Speak for the soil?

(Ah Margaret Mead . . . do you sometimes dream of Samoa?)

The robots argue how to parcel out our Mother Earth
To last a little longer
like vultures flapping
Belching, gurgling,
near a dying doe.
“In yonder field a slain knight lies—
We’ll fly to him and eat his eyes
with a down
derry derry derry down down.”

An Owl winks in the shadow
A lizard lifts on tiptoe
breathing hard
The whales turn and glisten
plunge and
Sound, and rise again
Flowing like breathing planets

In the sparkling whorls

Of living light.

"We love the notion that a happy cow yields great meat. Finally the flavor of grass-fed beef is living up to the hype." We would agree! Our happy cows heal the land and provide delicious, nutrient dense meat at the end of their lives. The butcher shop mentioned in this article sells our product.

It’s really uplifting to read how the APD Farm is working to address climate change. I recently learned how farms are able to play a key role in providing a feasible solution to climate change from the inspirational doc “Kiss the Ground”. This movie explains that when farmers practice regenerative agriculture, they are able to produce healthy soil (soil that isn’t tilled or sprayed with toxic chemicals). Healthy soil, in turn, is able to sequester significant amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. This solution is supported by a multitude of activists and scientists, such as Allan Savory and Jason Mraz. To learn more about this solution check out “Kiss the Ground” on Netflix below, the film is also available on Vimeo.
