Virginia has nearly 54,000 farmers and farm workers. We thank them for their continued dedication as they work each day to feed, fuel and clothe the world.
Governor Glenn Youngkin today announced that family-owned Hidden Pines Meat Processing, LLC in Madison County, Virginia will begin providing meat processing services to the region’s livestock producers. The company, which has been operating for more than twenty years, is expanding to year-round operations and adding USDA inspection services to meet surging consumer demand for locally produced meats.
This expansion will lead to the creation of at least seven new jobs, nearly $500,000 of new investment and enable the company to process over 1,100 locally raised beef cattle, hogs, lambs, and goats each year. The project is being incentivized through a $40,000 grant from the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Fund.

Apple season is here! Did you know there used to be thousands of kinds of apples grown in the United States!? While many are lost, you can still find some of these varieties grown today!
In Virginia, most apple production is located in the western counties stretching from Wi******er (Frederick Co.) in the north, to the tier of counties along the North Carolina border. Much acreage is devoted to processing production, especially in the northern counties; elsewhere in the state, fresh production predominates. The five leading varieties are Red Delicious, York, Golden Delicious, Rome and Fuji.

FARM TOUR NEXT SATURDAY 5/29!
Please join us for a Farm Tour next Saturday 5/29, 9am-12pm!
Part of our mission is to give you opportunities to learn about how your food is raised and opportunities to enjoy the beauty of our farm and happy animals! We want to know you, you to know us, and you to know how we are raising your food!
This is a great opportunity to do that!
Only 40 slots for adults, so this will not be a huge crowd--lots of opportunity to see up close, and hands on, meet all our great staff, and hit us with questions!
Also, only 40 spots, so please get your tickets soon!
You can get those here: https://whiffletreefarmva.com/store/farm-tours
I, Jesse, will be leading the tour. And I will be joined by our awesome staff who lead on their given enterprises--Carmen on the baby chicks, Kathryn and John-Paul on the meat chickens in the pasture, Owen on the laying hens, Ben on the cattle!
Things that we will do and learn about on the tour:
--see the 2000 laying hens, and learn about how we keep them safe, and keep them on fresh pasture. We will get as nerdy as you want on any of the details!
--see and hold the baby chicks in the brooder! Learn about how we mother these little cute puff balls until they are hardy enough to go to pasture!
--see and learn about the meat chickens on pasture, and how we keep them safe, on fresh pasture, and generally happy!
--see and learn about the beef cattle. Getting to watch them move to fresh pasture is a beautiful site! Exploring their cow pies and the grasses to learn about the animals and land!
--If you want to know anything about our business model, we will share!
--You will have time to check out the Farm Store as you like.
--You are welcome to bring a picnic and eat down by the stream! My favorite spot!
I hope you will join us! It will be a lot of fun and very informative, especially with the whole Whiffletree gang there!
And please feel free to ask any of us about how we got into farming or any of those fun stories!
Tickets are $25 per adult. 17 and younger are free.
I hope you will join us!
