Nova is enjoying the beautiful spring weather here on the homestead!
We're busy preparing for our spring kidding season. Only 4 does bred to our fullblood black buck Johnny for late May kids. We're excited to see these babies!

Bringing in the herd for dinner!

We don't typically breed for spring/summer kids, however this year we do have a few does due to kid the end of May. All babies will be ABGA, out of our fullblood black buck, Mill Oak Dressed in Black. We're very excited to see what Johnny throws as his January doeling is a favorite for this year!

While dam raised kids are always the goal, we prepare for bottle, or bucket, babies each year. This cold milk free feed system has worked great for us last year so we're implementing it again.

Nova finished this round of kidding season with thus beautiful red doeling on the 3rd! This little spitfire is the first kid from our junior buck Mill Oak Dressed in Black, or Johnny as we call him, and we can't wait to see more of his offspring.

Nellie, one of our first fresheners, decided motherhood isn't for her. Her beautiful paint doelings moved in the house on Monday and are now thriving. Thank goodness.
Unfortunately last evening we lost Rosie very unexpectedly. Her loss is a major blow to our breeding program, but mostly to my heart. Her doeling has moved to the house as well, and is struggling to adjust to life as a bottle baby. Her brother was miraculously adopted by Loretta, who had two of her own bucklings yesterday. Loretta has raised triplets in the past, and I'm thankful for her help. Of course all 3 of her babies will be closely monitored.
Only 1 more doe to kid in this cycle.

Paisley delivered this pair with minimal assistance this afternoon. It's safe to say Hank was very busy his first week in the breeding pen back in July!

Only 2 more does to kid in this cycle.

Rosie and I have a love/hate relationship: she loves me when she's in late gestation and hates me all the other months of the year. I, on the other hand, love this doe. She delivered this set all on her own early this morning. Apparently Hank was very busy when we put him in the doe pasture! The red paint is Rosie's first doeling and will likely stay on the homestead.

FHL Francie Jarvis delivered this set of traditional twins this afternoon with minimal assistance. She's being a great first time mom! These beautiful kids are from our traditional buck Brids Hank.

The ice storm brought these beautiful kids out of FHL Pixie Girl and Brids Hank!
The dapple is a doeling, likely to remain here on the homestead. The traditional is a buckling, and one we're excited about.
What a great way to kick off kidding season!

Meet Glenn and the Kevins!

The homestead has it's own security system in our small flock of guineas. Although small, these dinosaur replicas are LOUD. When not alerting all residents of the homestead (and those down the hollow) to intruders both real and imaginary, Glenn and the Kevins wander about and get in everyone's way. Not only are they excellent watchdogs, they also excel in creating mindless panic amongst themselves. A car drives in, either known or a stranger=mindless panic. Someone walks in their direction no matter the distance between =mindless panic. We're sure they achieve their 10,000 steps each and every day with their unproductive activities.
While not my favorite birds, my parents do enjoy watching these comical dinos in the yard. Although Ollie doesn't appreciate them at all. 😂
When you visit the homestead, say hi to Glenn, the Kevins would really rather you leave them alone... If you're wondering how to tell them apart, Glenn is the piebald, the pearl, or gray, ones are the Kevins. Two of the Kevins are hens, however the only way to tell them apart is by their distinctive "buckwheat" call.
