Support the Justice for Black Farmers Act of 2020! This is so important. We cannot forget the legacy of decades of racist agriculture policies--especially if they continue!

In 1997, the USDA released the Civil Rights Action Team (CRAT) Report, a condemning report that affirmed Black farmer narratives of pervasive government-sanctioned racial discrimination against them through the Farm Service Agency and county committee systems. The Green is a place for us to gather and serve—our community, those in need, and the planet. We’re scaled back for the winter, but feel free to grab some greens from the pick-your-own perimeter garden! Columbia Heights Green (CHG) Food Security and Dietary Diversity Survey

Our mission at CHG is to improve and --that's why we weigh every single tomato!

Our very own Katherine Tully, along with colleagues Caroline Boules and Michael Malcolm, has launched a Food Security and Dietary Diversity survey in pursuit of this goal! We are focusing our efforts on the neighborhoods of , , and . The survey has been IRB approved for distribution through the University of Maryland.

We are especially trying to reach our neighbors in need - folks receiving SNAP and WIC and low-income neighbors, so that we can target our interventions to those who need our produce the most. If you work with underserved-populations in Columbia Heights, Petworth, or , please let us know as we would love to work with you to get the survey distributed.

However, all are welcome to take the survey. It will take you about 30 minutes to complete. BUT THERE ARE PRIZES :)

Monarch Butterflies evolved with milkweed—it’s the only plant they eat as a 🐛, and its toxins give Monarchs a poisonous protection from predators! They need that defense and all the help they can get right now as they migrate to Mexico for the winter. Monarch populations have dropped drastically in recent decades—that’s part of why we planted so many milkweeds at CHG this season! They’re native perennials that we—and the monarchs—will enjoy for years to come 👑🦋 @ Columbia Heights Green

But seriously, food insecurity has never been a more important issue for local residents. We have a responsibility as food producers to address malnutrition among our neighbors. We can do more to help, and we will strive to do so.

As DC residents cope with the coronavirus and an economy in freefall, urban farmers like Tully could play a role in meeting the fast-growing need for healthy food.

Attention Columbia Heights residents & businesses—we’ll take your compost, turn it into fertile soil, use it to grow both community & fresh produce, and donate the food to address local food insecurity 🙂 you don’t even need to wait for this bill to start!!!

From vacant lot to garden plots to unbeatable community spot

The Green is a community-run farm located in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC.

Once a vacant lot filled with tires and lead, the land we now cultivate was purchased in 2010 for $1 by Washington Parks & People. You can watch our transformation here!

We’ve grown from a junk-yard to a set of individual garden plots to a collectively run urban farm. Ten years on from its first planting, Columbia Heights Green now serves as a model of community agriculture and greening for all of DC and beyond!

Come check us out on Saturdays 10am-2pm. Kids and pets are welcome. You’ll go home with fresh produce and a lot of new friends!

With the help of thousands of volunteers, the site was transformed into what is known today as the Columbia Heights Green, a blueprint and model for communities across the city to undertake similar green conversions of forgotten spaces. Hundreds of pounds of produce are grown by volunteers at the Green each year, most of which is donated to food security organizations in DC. The Green also acts as a cultural and community site, hosting yoga classes, music festivals, and art exhibits. Columbia Heights Green
