Going through my 2016 photos brought such a massive smile to my face! What a beautiful year (save for the election of Trump…)

This was peak millennial earnestness. I launched Pakistan Eats, I cooked for, and with friends, I traveled to gorgeous places, I worked in rural schools, I took cheesy photos in cheesy outfits, I used so many filters, and I ate so well.

2016 was also our last year in DC before we moved to Juarez. I had really grown to love the city, and called it my home. So it’s only fitting to start 2026 back here.

I will be a very lucky woman if 2026 is even a fraction as magical and transformational as 2016 🌺

Lots of new faces here - hi!

I’m Maryam, an Islamabad-born food writer currently residing in DC. My debut cookbook, PAKISTAN, one of the most complete looks at Pakistani cuisine, just came out this March!

I have been writing about food since 2017, and been at the forefront of reporting on Pakistan’s food culture. I have written about Shan Masala, WhatsApp voice notes, Shinwari cuisine, and Pakistan’s biryani and pulao wars. I have also reported on Juarez’s young chefs, and Cambodia’s dying salt farms. I overthought this carousel and caption way too much, and so this is a very belated farewell love note to Manila.

If Phnom Penh felt like a girl comedy, Manila was a 90’s indie film. Long winding conversations, moody lighting, a fantastic, if somewhat disjointed soundtrack.

The friends that I made here, nearly all Manileños, taught me so much about love, patience, forgiveness and community, and finding romance, beauty and music in the most unlikely of places. What a gift, what a send off, thank you.
