Why do I love food retailers? It is not just because I started my career as the marketing specialist for Giant. It is because these seafood buyers get it. Guy Pizzuti of Publix and David Wier of Meijer helped launch FMI’s Power of Seafood report at #SENA19 along with Megan Rider of Alaska Seafood. Here’s a snapshot of that presentation.

The #sena19 session entitled What Consumers Want: The Future of Sustainable Seafood entertained a full house of conference attendees. Clearly, the industry finds this topic important and the panelists certainly delivered on their promise to promote better understanding of consumer purchasing motivators and market trends so that seafood brands, retailers, and other industry leaders can better inform their sustainability practices. #sustainableseafood #MSCbluefish

Getting more #sustainableseafood into the supply chain is a good thing, so Jim Cannon, CEO and founder of Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, led a panel of industry leaders in a discussion about innovative ways to scale up FIPs. Each panelist had a unique perspective to share, but they all pointed to NFI’s Crab Council as a model to be benchmarked. Kudos to Steve Phillips, president and CEO of Phillips's Seafood Restaurant for getting that pioneering project started. #SFP #SENA19

There seems to be three F-words consumers won’t tolerate in their seafood, they are frozen, foreign, and farmed. Can the industry change these negative perceptions to grow US consumption? Rich Castle of Giant Eagle, Josh Goldman of Australis Barramundi, Eric Buckner of Sysco Corporation, and Steve Hedlund of Global Aquaculture Alliance explored this topic on Day One at #sena19. #sustainableseafood #Sustainable #Oceans @bostonseafood #FrozenFoodMonth

Ever wondered how hurricanes affect ocean wildlife? Well according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), during a hurricane, fast-swimming marine animals (e.g., tuna, sharks, and dolphins) usually escape harm because they can detect pressure or salinity changes in the water, which prompts them to swim deeper or farther away. However, it seems that slower swimming or territorial fish, as well as crabs, sea turtles, and oysters, stay local and can get tossed around by the waves. Hmm, sounds like what happens on land too. #usoceangov #noaa

Millions of Americans access the great outdoors through recreational fishing each year. According to NOAA Fisheries Service, in 2015 nearly 9 million saltwater anglers took 61 million fishing trips generating $63 billion in sales impacts, $36 billion in value-added impacts, $22 billion in income impacts, and supporting 439,000 U.S. jobs. From Maine to Guam, striped bass to giant trevally (a.k.a. ulua), recreational fishing is both a cultural cornerstone and an important economic driver in the United States. #NOAAFisheries

The Bahamas' spiny lobster fishery has achieved the region's first MSC - Marine Stewardship Council certification. Congratulations to Mia Isaacs, president of the Bahamas Marine Exporters Association, the Bahamas' Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, and the country’s commercial fishing community on the work they did to ensure that the nine-year fishery improvement project and 19-month-long assessment, based on MSC standards, were a success.

Enjoyed a great dinner at Kith and Kin in Washington, DC last night. This African-Caribbean inspired restaurant, created by Chef Kwame Onwuachi, is a must for the local or visiting food lover. I can highly recommend the Curried Goat with Dahl Puri Roti, the Jollof Rice, the Fried Plantains, and the Stewed Oxtails with Jasmine Rice, Pigeon Peas and Thumbelina Carrots. Our gardening projects at Kuumba Learning Center (Washington, DC) and Cultural Academy For Excellence (Mt. Rainier, MD) are already in full swing. In addition to the usual cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, squash, watermelon, and cantaloupe, this year we planted grapes, blackberries, edamame, and okra for the first time. We are proud to offer these great kids an interactive opportunity to participate in nature and look forward to a great harvest. #CAFEYouth

Because of overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction, the Chesapeake Bay does not produce as much crab as it once did. As a result, some of the “Maryland Crab” or “Chesapeake Crab” that Americans consume comes from regions like the Gulf of Mexico, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand. A new study presented at the 2018 Seafood Expo North America, explores the many tools required to set a crab fishery on a path for sustainability. Learn more at #NFI-Crab-Council-Asia-Initiative

Sampling comfort food from around the world: I took a walk on the saucy side enjoying Injera and Tibs from Dukem Restaurant on U Street in Washington, DC. An Ethiopian staple, injera is a sourdough flatbread made from an indigenous Ethiopian grain called teff. Tibs can be made with various meats, usually beef, lamb or chicken, that are cut into small chunks and sautéed in butter or oil with onions, garlic, berbere (hot pepper), rosemary, and a host of other spices. Ethiopian cuisine is not only a style of food, but also a way to eat. Meals are served atop a large injera. Traditionally, clean hands not silverware is needed as smaller injera are used to pick up bites of entrées and side dishes. Thank you for introducing me to the act of gursha, Dukem. I had a great time.

Quiche, American Style. Served piping hot smothered in Swiss cheese with Bacon, Mushrooms, and a side of Roasted Potatoes. Considered a classic dish of French cuisine, quiche actually originated in Germany; the word ‘quiche’ is from the German ‘Kuchen’, which means cake. Quiche became popular in England sometime after World War II and in the United States during the 1950's. Today, we can find many varieties of quiche, from the original quiche Lorraine, to ones with broccoli, mushrooms, ham and even seafood. Delicious anytime, quiche can be served as an entrée, for lunch, breakfast or an evening snack. Sampling comfort food from around the world; I kept things casual and traditional this weekend enjoying Shōyu Ramen at Daikaya in Chinatown, Washington, DC. The oldest of the four basic types of ramen, Shōyu uses a dark rich soy sauce in the base. The resulting soup was tangy, salty, and savory with toasted garlic and slight caramel tones which was still fairly light on the palate. In keeping with Sapporo ramen tradition the noodle soup was also adorned with bamboo shoots or menma, green onions, seaweed or nori, bean sprouts, various herbs and spices, sliced pork or chāshū and finally topped with half of a soy and ramen stock marinated, soft-boiled egg. Thank you for a delicious meal Daikaya. Arigatō gozaimash*ta. @daikaya @Daikayadc

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) projects that Latin America and the Caribbean region will see the fastest increase in per capita fish consumption in the next 10 years. Is it any wonder then that The Global Aquaculture Alliance's Global Outlook for Aquaculture Leadership (GOAL) conference will be held in Ecuador in 2018? This will be the first time in seven years that this event is being held in Latin America. #GOALConf18
