Looking forward to serving our Chai Porter this week at a private tasting event - it's a dark brown with a tan head, this beer is robust with a heavy malt aroma and flavor providing a complex array of nuts, chocolate, toffee and caramel. Sweetness tempered with just enough hop bitterness to smooth it out. For the winter season, Chai spices have been added to bring out the festivus in the rest of us.

Did you miss our tasting and fundraising event in September? Don't despair -- here's your chance to try our beers and get to know our brewery. We invite you to try our Belgian IPA, and the first offering of two delicious seasonals: a Pumpkin Ale and a Scotch Ale (Wee Heavy). We will be serving our beer on Capitol Hill at a private residence on East Capitol Street, SE to our thirsty friends. We hope you can join us. Like this post and I will send you the address.

Yes, Portland is on the list, but so are Cleveland and Washington D.C., says Jason Notte.

Our pilgrimage reaches it's zenith in the beer mecca of the world -- with visits to the Hops Museum in Reningelst, the reclusive Trappist brewery of St. Sixtus in Westvleteren, de Struise Brauwers in Oostvleteren and De Dolle Brauwers in Esen. We think we've died and gone to heaven!

Two nights in “Hoppeland,” Rengingelst is nestled against the French border and the front lines of WWI, in a country known for more than 800 beers, this region has the distinctive honor of being called the “brewers’ corner of Belgium.” Some of the best beer in the world are brewed within a 10-minute drive from where we staying in this sleepy village outside Poperinge.

History comes alive at the Hops Museum - where we are introduced to brewing beer in this region can be traced back to the origin of the first settlements. The hops museum provides a fascinating peek into the life and history of the hard-working harvesters of this precious fruit, the hop cone. The museum covers the life of this amazing climbing vine (or bine, as a hop vine is also called) and those who farm it. A guided tour of Poperinge’s National Hop Museum walks you through four seasons of cultivating this remarkable bud.

A ten minute drive through hop fields and very narrow back country roads to find the Abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren. While the Abbey is not open to the public -- it's like Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, except they don't give out golden tickets...ever. We managed to enjoy a pint of their Golden blonde and the 12 in the Vrede cafe and purchased two bottles and four glasses to take home and enjoy at a later date. We shared an 8 for good measure. Simply amazing!

After a pleasant encounter with John Arteaga from California, we took a short drive to Oostvleteren to visit de Struise Brauwers (they are only open to the public 4 hours each week) to sample some of the award winning beers brewed by head brewmaster Urbain Cotteau and Tomas Danko. We purchased two each of their year round beers, along with 2 bombers of the Belgian IPA.
The 750 ml bottle of Struise Danko Power IPA has a hazy amber orange with a creamy off-white head. Smells of pine resin, herbal hops with a touch of rye and black bread and taste of lemon grass/lemon-like hop notes and bittermalt sweetness.
Black Albert is an outstanding and silky smooth Russian Imperial Stout at 13% ABV.
Motuecha is a nicely balanced and very refreshing Belgian Pale Ale with 5% ABV.
Svea IPA at 7% ABV has light earthy and herbal hops with some decent bitterness and some citrus taste.

The following day, we arrived at De Dolle in time for our guided tour and tasting, led by brewmaster and artist Kris Herteleer. The Arabier was our favorite with a unique, but convincing taste - wheaty, malty aromas with a subtle sourness. The Oerbier is a Belgian strong dark ale with a spicy and sweet taste with an amazing carbonation. At the end of a very relaxing afternoon at the brewery, Kris made sure I didn't leave without trying a special reserve sour. He said, you cannot leave Belgium without trying this (somehow, I think there is much much more to discover...)

Unforgettable Amsterdam experience to enjoy local beers at a brewery that sits side-by-side with one of the last standing windmills of this splendid city. #natcapbrew - the unpasteurised and unfiltered beers offered by Brouwerij ‘t IJ [www.brouwerijhetij.nl/] are some amazing craft beer selections, and include Zatte - a Belgian Tripel, a full-bodied, golden beer with a scent of fresh fruit. The flavor is slightly sweet, ending with a fine, dry aftertaste. Columbus is a copper-gold beer with liberal quantities of malt and bitter hops create a complex, full flavor. A slightly sweet and malty aroma of chocolate, fruit and grain, with the bitter hops standing out in the aftertaste. Finally, the wheat malt in IJWit gives the beer a delightful, fresh flavor, and the addition of coriander and lemon during the brewing process produces a rich aroma of banana, citrus and spices. We also enjoyed their refreshing "Zomer Blond."

In addition, we enjoyed a tour and tasting and authentic Amsterdam local beer at Brouwerij de Prael [deprael.nl/] (recommended to us by Brouwerij t'IJ). The brewers at de Prael are knowledgeable and passionate and proud of the fine selections of craft beer, made from organic ingredients. A flight includes the following beers: Witbier, Weizen, Milkstout, Tripel, and Scotch Ale. Our favorite were the smooth Milkstout and the Double IPA.

Brouwerij de Prael also makes it a point to employ bar and kitchen staff that have been unemployed for the long-term for whatever reason (in many cases, this is due to things such as a mental illness, homelessness, or recovery from addiction). For that reason alone, this place is worth a visit to support a brewery that truly gives back to its community. We recommend paying a visit to both breweries for a real Amsterdam experience.

Icelandic Beer Research - Initial Findings

The first leg of our European Brewery Research tour is complete. Our favorite beers in Iceland include two from Ölvisholt Brugghús - Fósturlandsins Freyja - a Belgian witbier brewed with orange bark and coriander. It’s light and refreshing with a nice, fruity ester note, and Mória - a red ale that strikes a nice balance between hop bitterness and malty sweetness. We also liked all of the year round selections from Einstök Brewing Company #drinkconquerrepeat, especially the White Ale and Islandic Pale Ale. While we were not able to make it up to Akureyri, I was very pleased to have received a warm welcome from Founder Jack Sichterman and Einstök Brewmaster, Baldur Kárason. I can't wait to try Snorri's Awakening Coffee Pale Ale!
