Introducing Pickles, Stewy, and Waffles! I have been buying piglets from Pigs R Us in Battle Ground for years, and these are the sweetest yet! It is so vital to have generations of farmers to support one another, and I have been so grateful to be able to buy such healthy piglets every spring from a family that has been raising pigs since probably before I was born! Here’s to cute piglets, and honoring our farmer elders and their knowledge!

I think it’s the little things that make homesteading so amazing. In the spring it is literally “the little things” that make me pause in the middle of a work day to just take in the sweetness of it all. The guinea fowl and little chicks just moved out of the house and into the old play house, and have no idea how many snuggles they’re about to get when camp starts next week!

Nothing says summer like a giant pile of eggs! It’s so fun to have such a diversity of egg colors from such a healthy, happy flock of birds. I am always amazed at the joy our campers find in holding the chickens and finding eggs on the farm. Such a good reminder that often the simplest things bring us the greatest joy!

It’s a good day when breakfast is taller than you! We finally finished the new pasture fence and moved the animals. So amazing to see all that hard work pay off in the form of happy, well fed critters!

If only you could smell the heavenly sweet scent of this massive honeysuckle in epic full bloom. I was walking by to check on the goats and sheep, and the sound of our honey bees getting drunk on nectar was simply mesmerizing.

Today was a great lesson in, "never say never" (because you have not met your future self yet!). Many years ago I did a ton of research about sheep, and landed on Icelandics as being the perfect sheep for this particular farm. After I sold my sheep a few years ago I said I would never raise sheep again, but....Icelandic sheep are kind of the goats of the sheep world as far as I'm concerned. They love eating blackberries, you can use the wool for all sorts of crafts, and they don't mind hanging out in the rain, which is great since they just brought them home today and it is cold and raining! I already love these lambies!

Planting a Three Sisters Garden is so much fun, provides a balanced diet with just three plants, and honors the ingenuity of Indigenous agriculture. I love teaching kids and adults the Three Sisters trio of corn, bean, and squash, and after several failed attempts at making it work in the PNW, this video explains the trick I figured out after much trial and error to make it work perfectly in our climate.

It is hard to express the unexpected moments of joy on a homestead that often bubble up during a work project that can leave a smile on your face for hours. This morning I went in search of some fencing wire, as I walked down a hillside covered in spring flowers with a gorgeous and broody sky above, I had my adorable entourage of cats and dogs with me. Even though I am often working alone, I never really feel "alone" on the homestead because I am always surrounded by animals. These are the things that make homesteading special! Cats who go for walks, spring flowers, companionship, all woven into a million projects. And impromptu work stoppages when the cat sits on your fencing line! Thanks Chloe cat!

Baby goats! I originally brought goats to our homestead farm for milk 8 years ago, and that was wonderful, but what I found in the PNW is that goats are amazing for natural blackberry control. I have now reclaimed acres of our farm from the invasive Himalayan blackberry with intentional rotational grazing! And, baby goats just make me smile!!!

There are really few things more precious than seeing your babies all grown up and snuggling with new farm babies! Yesterday we brought home a new mama goat and three kids from Broadway Ranch. Karen has done the most incredible job preserving the Heritage San Clemente Goats. I'll tell you all about it tomorrow when we take a video of these cuties, but for now, we are so excited to welcome these gorgeous, healthy, little loves to the farm.
