Congratulations to Hanna Toering and Balou Moon BHF for finishing third in the Brownlands Farm Grand Prix (1.40m) yesterday in Franklin, TN. I was able to make a quick trip to view this performance live -- my first horse show since pre-COVID! So fun!!!

Photo was taken during the Grand Prix (1.50m) at HITS-Lamplight in July. Easily one of the best performance photos that we have.

Bittersweet to formally announce the retirement of two of our top competition mares, Premonition BHF and Coquette BHF. Good news is that both are in-foal, with confirmed heartbeat checks, to produce a new generation of competition horses. But we are sure going to miss seeing these two in the show ring!

EMC/CM/JBP Premonition BHF retires from the hunter ring with her long term partner Jordan Toering. Premonition was 2018 USEF HOTY, Grand Large Junior Hunter, and "Best Mare" at Junior Hunter Finals in 2018 (fourth overall).

Premonition is a 2006 Hanoverian mare by Pablo out of SPS Galaxis (Ganymed/Black Sky). She is one of the handful of Hanoverian mares in the country to receive all three mare titles/distinctions — Elite Mare, Competition Mare, and Jumper Breeding Program Mare. Her mother Galaxis, an imported “overall 8” mare that “should not have left Germany,” was Reserve Grand Champion at age 14 at the MAHB Mare Show in 2003 and produced a number of successful hunters.

Premonition is in foal to Coconut Grove, who was selected based on his demonstrated success with this motherline.

EM/CM/JBP Coquette BHF retires from the jumper ring, having successfully competed in several grand prixs (1.45m) and high junior jumper classes with her rider Hanna Toering. Hanna and Coquette participated in the inaugural USHJA Gold Star Clinic with Richard Spooner in 2017.

Coquette is a 2006 Hanoverian mare by Coconut Grove out of JBP Windbraut (Wanderkoenig/Wendenburg/Winnetou). She is another one of the handful of Hanoverian mares in the country to receive all three mare titles/distinctions — Elite Mare, Competition Mare, and Jumper Breeding Program Mare. Her mother Windbraut won her mare performance test at the MAHB Mare Show in 2001 and competed in Children’s Jumpers with Hanna. Coquette has already produced a successful daughter, EM/CM/JBP Balou Moon BHF, a 2010 Hanoverian mare currently competing with Hanna in grand prixs (1.50m).

Coquette is in foal to Fuerst Gotthard aka “Titleist” (First Gotthard/Inschallah/More Magic).

Here's an article about local legend Diane Crump published yesterday in the NY Times.

"In 1998, she hung up her saddle. Ms. Crump, now 72, started a website offering her consulting and sales services to potential horse buyers that she operates out of her home in Linden, Va. 'For me, life is working,' Ms. Crump said. 'We are here to help other people, to be part of the human network — a big part of life is you work at a job that you are intended to do. In my case, God gave me gifts — a love of horses and a fair amount of horsemanship and a love of people.'"

Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center

Honoring the memory of Paul Goodness, CJF

The Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center is grateful both for Paul Goodness’s dedication and for the strong relationship and synergy that he built with our faculty and staff over many, many years. We will all miss you, Paul.

The following statement was provided by Paul’s immediate family:

It is with sadness that we report Paul Goodness has passed away. Over the past 40 years, he quietly worked as one of the best farriers the horse community has ever known. His humble nature, profound work ethic, kindness, and commitment to his craft placed him in a class all his own. There will never be another Paul.

Throughout his career, he worked on many of the world’s highest-level equine athletes, but also beloved backyard family ponies. He would shoe an Olympic-bound sport horse at 9 a.m. and a companion mini pony at noon, giving both precisely the same attention. A horse’s job did not matter to him, only that these horses were comfortable doing whatever was asked of them.

Paul was the last hope for so many horses, and his caring skill allowed so many of them another chance at a normal life, often despite devastating hoof conditions. He was always committed to learning and progressing, never static, always listening to new ideas and open to new technologies.

Those of us who learned from him are lucky beyond words, and he mentored so many along his way.

Paul’s family was first and foremost to him, and he always sought to balance his time between work and home. He was so proud of them all. Paul beamed when he talked about them.

He would not want a parade or any fanfare surrounding his accomplishments, but it is impossible to allow him to pass quietly away without recognizing how amazing his contributions have been – to horses and humans alike. Paul was a gracious and kind soul who will be sorely missed by so many.

5 Essential Stretches You Should Be Doing With Your Horse - Heels Down Mag

Jordan Toering made it into HeelsDown Magazine this week in an article about stretching your horses prior to riding! This photo was taken of her preparing Premonition BHF at Devon in 2018.

Stretching helps keep horses limber, supple and sound. A stretching routine can be used before a ride as a warmup or after for recovery.

We are sad to hear of the passing of Paul Goodness. We were fortunate to have been a beneficiary of his knowledge and expertise as he kept Premonition not only sound, but performing at the top of her game, through all of 2018 during her successful run for HOTY. Godspeed Paul! You will be missed.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Paul Goodness earlier this week. We cannot sum up who he was or what he meant to the equestrian community any better than the following words, written by the Goodness family & Amy Sidwar, shared with their kind permission:
“It is with great sadness that we report Paul Goodness has passed away. Over the past 40 years, he quietly worked as one of the best farriers the horse community has ever known. Georgia Signs 15 Riders in 2020 Class - University of Georgia Athletics

Yesterday, was National Signing Day. Jordan Toering signed her Letter of Intent with the University of Georgia to ride for their Equestrian Team. Kind words from Coach Anna Becker:

"Jordan is a standout in many ways. Her outstanding academics are truly impressive, and her ability to ride any horse, and to win, is very exciting for our team," Becker said. "She is a passionate horsewoman, and works incredibly hard for everything she has achieved and has yet to achieve. Her kindness to others and her horses, her adaptability, work ethic, and her athletic successes will be a welcomed asset to Georgia Equestrian."

ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia equestrian head coach Meghan Boenig has announced that 15 riders have signed a National Letter of Intent to continue their riding careers and education at UGA beginning the 2020-21 school year.

Two weeks ago, Maclay Finals for Jordan Toering was definitely not in our plans. Over the subsequent week or so, plans changed multiple times and ultimately, Jordan and Jayne headed to Lexington, Kentucky. Her first round early in the order (and on another relatively green horse that she had only ridden a handful of times over the few days just prior to the Finals) put her in the top ten coming back for the flat phase: https://youtu.be/6ywBX5q5phk. Unfortunately, the flat phase (which typically plays to Jordan's strengths) didn't go as planned and bumped Jordan out of the ribbons. After another respectable round over fences, she finished well within the top 25.

This morning, I asked her "Was it worth it?" Her response humbled me. No remorse, no regret, no sour grapes: "Absolutely. I just wish I could have given the horse a better ride."

Congratulations to Jordan Toering for finishing in the top 25 at USEF Medal Finals this past weekend. Jordan was 7th out of 239 entries after a lovely first round. She had a couple bobbles with the counter-canter in the second round bumping her out of the ribbons. Even after the mistakes, she received high compliments from the live stream commentators for her poise and compassion for the horse. So very proud!!!
