Still in the process of getting my cool weather crops out and my summer crops in the high tunnel. Today I interplanted cucumber transplants in with my baby beet green bed. Never done that before, we'll find out if it was a good move in the future. I'll likely mulch with straw when the baby greens come out. Gotta get these cucs watered in they already look sad.

This one of the most challenging parts of farming for us. This lettuce no longer looks like lettuce, more like a Christmas tree. It is preparing to flower and seed. This bed of lettuce ordinary would not have bolted for a least a week or so but because of the heat this last week it bolted early. The result is lettuce that tastes awful and cannot be harvested. We do have other beds to harvest from but this will create a shortage for us in the near future. We love the warm days but freezing to nearly triple digits in a week is tough to plan for.

If you look towards the bottom you will see a young wolf spiders. I call these guys "lettuce guardians". By end of spring every lettuce head will have at least 1 wolf spider waiting to ambush any prey that wants to eat our lettuce.

Caught this in my high tunnel today. These black spiders are jumping spiders, not black widows. They are ambush predators like wolf spiders and do not spin webs. This one has caught a sphinx moth. The larva of the sphinx moth is the hornworm or tomatoe worm. Predators like these help us drastically and make it possible for us to use zero pesticides on our farm.

Though these cool weather crops are looking great, the heat is on the way at it will be summer soon in the high tunnel. Pretty soon this will all be tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, basil and bush beans. Don't worry it's still spring outside and we will continue with the salad greens and root veg in our outdoor field plots.
