Me. As a sixty-something first year farmer.

06/04/2026

Five things I have learned in my first year being a non-retired weekend farmer.

1. Water is like gold. There is never enough. And then suddenly there is too much. And it’s never close to where you need it.

2. Dirt is really heavy; get a really good tractor. In fact..

3. Get two. Maybe two of everything. Something is always broken when you really need it.

4. Some people would call my Kawasaki mule a toy and that’s fair. But it is my most valuable equipment: my son and his friend will show up to help in exchange for some four-wheelin’ mule time.

And finally

5. Be prepared to show up at the jiffy mart at 11:00 AM on a Saturday covered head to toe in black dirt, to pick up your eighth power ade of the weekend. Everyone around you will be filling up their boats and packing their ice chests. You will question every life-decision you ever made.

Have a good week.
