Pro-tip - do not buy chicks when the shipment 1st gets to the store. Wait a week or so & then buy them when their their wing feathers have started to come in. The store has absorbed the mortality loss of the 1st several days instead of the consumer. & the store will almost always discount them, especially if you taking a larger quantity, because they want to make room for the next batch of day-old chicks. Ask your store 2 things - 1. Do they have any older chicks in the back they need to get rid of for discount. & 2. When does their chick shipment come in. They will usually start discounting 1-2 days ahead of the shipment day.
Wes picked up 6 black sexlink pullets for me on Sunday for $2/ea instead of $7/ea. Then Joe went back to the store & bought all of their Freedom Rangers (22) for $.50/ea & the store only had 4 ducklings left so he bought them for $4/ea instead of $12/ea. Don't ya know, every single bird is alive & healthy!

Side Note - for larger batches of chicks, cut down the plastic tote of an IBC tote. They make wonderful brooder boxes! Plenty of space for the birds & easy to clean

Woo! We finally hit another baby-step milestone today for the farm & were able to put out our farm-fresh free range eggs out for sale at the Our Way Farm farmstand!!!

We are offering both natural, unwashed egg with care cards as well as washed cold eggs, all in vintage-style natural fiber egg cartons!

I found a butter supplier that sells for $2.50/lb! So I HAD to buy 10lbs & now Im going to cook it down & can it!!!! I'm also cooking down our tallow from our butchered steer for canning! By the time I'm done with these 2 processes & can the 5 pints of processed beef fat that's currently in the fridge, I should be set on shelf-stable cooking fats for a while!

Beef bone stock is in process!! 1 pot done, a 2nd pot ready to strain & add to the 1st & working on the 3rd rotation. Once all the bones are roasted, boiled & strained, I will combine them all, adjust the seasoning as needed & cook down even more for a richer, more flavorful stock!

22mo old dairy/beef cross steer.
365 lbs hanging weight.
150lb ground beef
Approx 100 lbs of cuts
Approx 8lbs of tallow fat to cook down.
Approx 100lbs of bones to cook down.
$440 to the butcher
$260 in feed/hay/diesel costs for him for 2yrs.

= $2.917 per lbs.

THIS IS WHY WE GROW OUR OWN MEAT!!!!!

When your big cows won't stay down in their pasture for 3 days because the big calf keeps calling them up top to be friends...& then the horse keeps calling the cows back down so she isn't alone...you flex & adjust.
We brought the horse up top & put her & the 3 big cows in the old pig pasture behind the garden. We will make some adjustments to the pig shed today to open it up so they all have shelter out of the wind & get more hay up top.

Sometimes, it's just not worth fighting the problem & makes life easier to adjust & go with it.
