Remember when y’all passed on that Silverudds laying gang?

Well, Teal H. came in and cleaned up.

I said there was a 50/50 shot, either you get the camo girl or one of my heavy inkers, and honestly I didn’t care either way because I needed to lighten the load.

WELLLLL… she pulled an inker.

Everyone give Teal a round of applause for scoring a hell of a deal. 👏

I’ll be posting more laying hens soon.
Rest assured, they won’t be inkers, but still solid genetics.

Took a break from a wild month to slow things down with my first classroom reading of Jane’s Chicken Nugget. I brought an incubator along and shared a hands-on lesson all about eggs and chickens. These eggs are set to hatch May 6th.
Huge thank you to Mrs. Gardner’s class for having me back again.

Trigger warning… ⚠️ failure to thrive.

I’ve been back and forth on this, but I think I’ve landed. I understand both sides. If you can hatch a chick by hand and help it, why not give it a chance? But then there’s the other side, survival of the fittest. If it couldn’t hatch on its own, maybe it wasn’t meant to.

Honestly, I’m curious where others stand.

I hand-hatched a Silverudds and marked a yellow chick so it wouldn’t accidentally end up in a sale. Went to check on them before bed and all the other chicks were piled on top of the brooder plate, YELLING. The yellow chick had just passed underneath it.

I think I’m done assisting for now. I don’t care if it lowers my hatch rate on paper. If it’s meant to be, that chick will bust out. Even after 29 hours of a pip, even when you see that little beak slipping down… 😅🙃

PS, chickens are hard, if you haven’t gathered that. All these small moments add up to the bigger picture. This is why some people just can’t do it. It hits your heart too many times. 💕
