Not every lake is safe to swim in every day of the summer.

During hot weather, certain lakes and ponds can develop harmful algal blooms—often seen as thick green, blue-green, or paint-like scum floating on the surface of the water. These blooms can produce toxins that may be harmful to both people and pets.

If you notice water that looks unusually bright green, blue-green, or covered with a surface film:

• Don't swim in it.
• Keep children out.
• Keep dogs from drinking or playing in it.
• Rinse off immediately if accidental contact occurs.

We know. You drank from the garden hose as a kid and turned out fine.

But that water may have been sitting in a hot hose, picking up whatever was already inside it, and passing through outdoor plumbing that was never meant to work like your kitchen faucet.

So yes, watering the lawn? Perfect.

Filling the dog’s bowl? Maybe use a clean, drinking-water-safe hose.
