Winter prep has officially begun. Moved sheep to our other pasture, it’s a bit protected from winter wind by the barn. Now we can get pasture they moved from mowed and electric net fencing down. Plus some general clean up around property of things that won’t be needed until spring and started to clean out garden. Oh and kitty snuggles from Frankie! She is usually pretty skittish and usually wants nothing to do with us.

Lady ❤️
Lady was one of nine chicks we purchased through our local 4H office, to show in a specific class at fair that year. Unfortunately our chicks all started dying one by one. They were obviously ill, I’m guessing from hatchery, and all had same symptoms. Emily got them all separated into symptomatic and non symptomatic, and started nursing them back to health. We have never had that kind of loss in the hundreds of chicks we have raised. Of the nine we started with only two were alive 24 hrs later. We named them Cookie (aka cook) and Lady.
This spring I was devastated when I saw what looked like all of either Cook or Lady’s feathers in the pasture. I had just seen a hawk circling and assumed, by the amount of feathers, one was gone or dead nearby. I was sad and my heart ached knowing Emily would be so sad.

Then Lady walked out of some tall grass with one of our roosters who was injured while saving her. She lost SO MANY feathers from the hawk attack and our brave rooster ended up passing away from his injuries.
She has almost grown all her feathers back in! It has taken so many months, but she was plucked clean on her entire back, lower neck, and top of wings. She has a quarter size spot on each side almost where wing attaches to body. You can see the spot on one side in the picture. I hope she eventually grows new feathers, she had some injuries to the tissue at this area on each side as well.

Enjoying these cooler days and a few that are dry were we can even seen the sun!

The sheep use to head into the barn to relax mid day, but now can just lay down in the pasture to rest since it’s cooled down some.

Also there is one in every group…turned the fence on high after Henry was sticking his head through for fresh grass…umm it’s been so rainy we have had no issues with lush pastures…just walk two feet silly boy! He was doing this right as we were headed out for a few hours so the electric fence got turned up…I was afraid he would get his head stuck or ear tag caught.

Babydoll sheep are seasonal breeders, these cooler days and evenings will trigger breeding season. So excited for spring lambs already!

Today has been rainy off and on, according to my kids it’s also cold out. It was actually 70 degrees and it felt so nice after the last few weeks! It’s a perfect feels like fall day to get cozy inside with the rain and cooler temps. We had a busy day so as much as I wanted to get cozy with a book and tea it didn’t happen.
We came home from a 4H meeting this afternoon during a break in the rain and I think almost every animal was out together taking advantage of the break in the rain!
Our chickens usually split off into 3-4 groups, so it’s not often you see so many out together! I think about half of our chickens were out in the pasture together, one group was up by house, the bantams were out closer to barn and not in pictures. Silkies are also not pictured as they have their own run on the other side of our property….we have had to rescue them from too many situations when they free ranged so they have two large runs now and stay contained unless being supervised 🤣
We are definitely looking forward to more fall days and breeding season for our sheep. I am already excited for lambs!!

Most are from Feb hatching, two are from hatching last fall making them right at or under a year.

The cucumbers have officially taken over! Well they did weeks ago 😂

A few have asked about vegetables…in the past we have had box/es out with veggies available for people to take when you pick up eggs.
Well this year cucumber vines have taken over at least a fourth of our garden. Vines have covered many of our plants - tomato, cherry tomato, broccoli, carrots, peppers, and more…
Photos do not do this justice, this is over a 10’x15’ area completely covered with cucumber vines.
Do we have cucumbers? Umm if we can find them and get to them. It’s almost impossible to reach, or see, most of them.

I planted 2 seeds.

The vines went crazy, and un noticed, during fair craziness otherwise I would have just ripped some of the overgrown areas out/off.

But this is the reason we have not had our veggie boxes out this year…because the garden is a cucumber jungle.

I am hoping that I uncovered enough tomato plants, early enough, for some late summer or early fall tomatoes!

I try to get something done in the pasture but I forgot I owned Charlotte 🤣 she wasn’t consulted ahead of time so she definitely needed to be involved every step of the way.

Charlotte does not understand personal space and would prefer to snuggle up next to someone (she will try to sit in your lap). She loves to have her head scratched, and has never turned down a treat…even if it’s just you picking grass and feeding it to her…
Really she just wants three or four humans doting on her at all times.

Welcome to the homestead. These girls will be called Libby and Evelyn.
Excited to add these ewes to our small flock and for, hopefully, more lambs next spring. I honestly don’t remember which is which as Libby and Evelyn are not their registered names, just what we will call them…but one is 2yrs and one is a yearling so both are old enough to breed this fall.

Had a brief moment of panic tonight! Walked by Emily’s silkies and Effie looked like she was wet and bloody. Then I noticed they all looked wet! I was so confused, panicked, worried…then I remembered Emily had given them watermelon scraps earlier this evening. That’s when I noticed the remnants of said watermelon scraps….

We have some chickens available, most were part of fair projects and we just can’t keep them all. Message with interest.
3 New Hampshire Reds (6 months)
2 Buff Orpington (18 months)
A silkie rooster or two (12 months)
A pair of Bantam Blue Cochins (6 months)

Possibly a few other pullets from mid February hatches.
