I did my Swedish Flower Hen fertility hatch early last spring and grew out that first batch rather than following my usual pattern and selling all of those chicks… ( I have sold them in the past because I have a hard time saying no to people.) 😊🤣 I was really hoping to have enough early layers to keep us in eating eggs all winter. I kept the best of those I grew out and lo and behold. We enjoyed eggs for our table all winter. The rest of my ladies, including my separate little flock of Ermine Ameraucana’s, have now kicked back into gear as well with our lengthening days. It’s time to put my grandmas egg basket back on the shelf and get the bigger one back out. Grandma’s was overflowing early this morning and there were still many hens in the nest boxes! Good timing with the price of eggs outrageous at the store… if they even have them in stock. It’s a good time to be my friend. 🤣 I have a bounty of table eggs right now. 😉❤️

Just a little fall reflection to share with you all. It has been a hectic summer and fall here at Flashpoint Ranch. We have tackled several projects, started a new travel business and enjoyed a phenomenal two week photo safari in Tanzania. My older Swedish Flower Hens continued to lay enough eggs throughout the late summer and fall to keep us in breakfast eggs. Now, my pullets have taken on that task and the last of my older adults are molting. Our weather has been so nice here in MI. It’s hard to think about putting up our wind guards for the coming winter, but it will need to be done before long. Big 😔 sigh. I hope you all are enjoying a pleasant fall season.

Not the best photo… doesn’t really do justice to this gorgeous pullet. She’s been a tough one to get a photo of as she’s always underfoot. She has a
beautiful body, wide, large body cavity, wide tail base, 2+ finger pelvic width at 10 weeks. On top of that I love her unique variation of the snoleopard coloration with the extra black on her head and neck and she has a nice amount of juvenile flowering. She’s a keeper!

It seems there is an age at which little crested pullets always look a tad bit miffed. 🤣

I’m going to use this space as my sounding board. I can “talk to myself” and save my poor hubby from having to listen to me attempt to sort out my thoughts. 🤣🤣🤣
Some decisions are much more difficult than others. This blue mottled snoleopard c**k is excellent with his hens and respectful of his humans. He has produced extremely well for me this year. I did not want to keep a snoleopard c**kerel last year. He won a spot in my breeding pens because of his structure in spite of his beautiful color. He has a wide body, tight wing set and carriage. I’d add a wee more length of back if I could. But with his deep chest and wide body he has loads of room for his internal organs. I have a number of snoleopard pullets and hens that I will be keeping for next year. Do I want a snoleopard c**k as well??? I have to think on this one. Snoleopard being a recessive trait can quickly cause a blizzard within your flock. I have no intention of allowing that to happen. I love each of my “classic” colors. I want to keep my flock a beautiful rainbow of colors. I could keep him over next years sno hens. 🤔 Producing 100% snoleopard offspring on different color bases.

I love this pullet princess. She has been a standout from the start. A nice, wide pullet with a deep, well fleshed breast. She had a two finger pelvic width at 6 weeks old and a full four fingers from end of keel to pelvic bones. This little lady is bred to produce lots and lots of large/extra large eggs! Bonus… If we didn’t want her in our breeding program she would make a lovely Sunday picnic main course in a few more weeks. She is a KEEPER.

I am loving the fact that my Mr. Obvious c**kerels present themselves very early. I have kept track for the past few years of when I can identify gender on the chicks. I take that into consideration when selecting my breeders. It’s not a top priority but when I have had two young c**kerels that are equal in the more important traits the early developed c**kerel edges out the late bloomer in my book. This year I noted my guesses on gender at 1 week, ten days, two weeks. I weigh weekly, so I could check my guesses weekly. I have been really pleased with the number of correct guesses I have been able to make this year at ten days old! 96% accurate! (87% accurate at 1 week, which I think is amazing!)
