Does tapping hurt the trees? Overall, no. Using best tapping guidelines, tapping of maple trees will not negatively affect the tree’s health. When we remove the taps from the tree it is left and it will heal over the course of the year naturally, and will eventually be completely covered by new growth. Pictured is the same tree with one tap hole made this year, and an old tap hole from 4 years ago.

It has been a busy 6 weeks. Maple season has come and now it’s gone. It’s all hand on deck to pull the taps from the trees. By removing the tap as soon as possible it allows the tree to heal the small tap hole, and throughout the year it will completely close up on its own. Tree health is our top priority so we can enjoy maple syrup made from the same trees for many years to come!
