New Life!! My guinea hens are hatching.
Laid by the birds at the farm, I took them from the nest as they are extremely susceptible to predators when sitting on a nest.
Day 27 in the incubator and at least 8 are pipping. Should be more in the next 1-2 days
Baby guinea hens are called KEET.

We’ve seen a few comments recently suggesting that our dogs getting out is simply a matter of “being more responsible,” so I want to clarify something for those who may not be familiar with working livestock guardian dogs.

Our Great Pyrenees are not typical pets — they are purpose-bred working animals whose job is to protect livestock from predators. That means their instinct is to patrol, respond to threats, and, at times, push beyond boundaries when they believe their animals are at risk.

When they leave the property, it’s not due to a lack of effort or care — it’s usually because they are actively responding to predator pressure in the area. That instinct is exactly what allows them to do their job effectively.

We continuously invest time, resources, and effort into fencing, reinforcement, and tracking. But anyone experienced with LGDs understands there is no perfect, one-time solution — it’s an ongoing management process, not a simple fix.

There’s a big difference between managing working guardian dogs on a farm and owning a household pet, and it’s not always obvious unless you’ve lived it.

We take our responsibility to our animals, our neighbors, and our operation seriously, and we will continue to do so.

We’re grateful for the many neighbors who understand the realities of farm life and have been supportive — it truly makes a difference. ❤️

We don't use poison around our farm, so rats are a real problem! Especially around the animal barns.
Today SCRAT - Sacramento Canines’ Rat Annihilation Team stopped by and helped us out.
These terriers are impressive - and well trained by their handlers of course.
If your farm has a rat problem I'm happy to share their info. No houses but chicken coops, pig pens, grain storage ..it's all fair game.
Just another cool way animals can help around an organic farm!
(Now to train my LGDs to hate rats as much as I do ;) )

It's NATIONAL FARM ANIMAL DAY!!
It's our day to shine ☀️😀

Ok, these "national days of" are getting a bit silly. But, we will take any opportunity to brag about our little farm family.
Our Desert Painted Sheep (yes they're sheep!), chickens, guinea hens and don't forget the hard working farm dogs - they all keep our organic farm moving. From grazing, to eating pests to fertilizing the ground (and of course we need someone to protect all of them 🐾🐾) - our farm animals are the heart of Rustic Roots. And today we celebrate them all!

Babies. Blossoms. And more babies!
Spring is in full force out here at the farm.
We have 7 new baby lambs.
🩷4 girls
💙3 boys
3 sets of twins this year! And my bottle fed baby had her first baby (a single female). All did great with no intervention - you can catch a delivery on video in my highlights.
I'll be keeping all the girls & 1 ram. And 2 boys will head to a new pasture as wethers in a few weeks.
Miss Red (aka Honey) passed away 😭 so I'm keeping her ram to keep her genetics in my flock. And of course more ewes mean more babies next year. We are working on growing our Desert Painted Sheep flock to be able to sell more to neighbor farms and have more lawn mowers (because with this beautiful spring weather comes more grass than my few can handle)
Happy Spring from the (growing) Rustic Roots family 🐏🐑

🤍 In Loving Memory of Star: The woman who is the roots of this place 🤍
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of the owner of this property, who founded what many of you knew and loved as - founded in honor of her late husband.
She ran the Christmas tree farm alongside her son Paul and lived on this land until the very end — full of life, strength, and joy at nearly 88 years young. She was an inspiration to all who knew her: hardworking, independent, and always smiling.
So many of you still ask about her when you visit Rustic Roots, remembering the days of Billy’s Farm and her beautiful handmade wreaths — some of which even won awards. 🌿🏆 (pictured here with her son Paul and one of her winning wreaths)
When Rustic Roots began to take shape, she was supportive and happy to see new life growing here, and we will always be grateful for her kindness and encouragement.
We are so honored to have known her, and we know many of you share the same sentiment.
Please join us in keeping her family in your thoughts and prayers.

The family has invited all to join her Celebration of Life being held:
📅 March 13, 2026
🕛 12:00 – 2:30 pm
📍 Elk Grove Park Pavilion
(Details in second image)
🤍🌲💐Thank you for being a part of her story.

(Please share any memories below, we will happily share with the family)

Today we lost one of our mama sheep, Honey.
And with that loss came a quiet moment that only animals seem to understand.
Zeus — our Great Pyrenees — came and sat beside me and her babies without being called. He just sat, as if he knew this was a moment for comfort and stillness.
At the same time, the rest of the flock, who had been out grazing, gathered quietly along the fence line.
Farm life gives us so much joy… and also teaches us how deeply we can love and how deeply we can hurt. Our animals don’t just live here — they become our family.
Honey leaves behind a beautiful legacy. These twins were her final gift to this farm.
Lemy (our girl) will stay and one day have babies of her own, carrying her mama’s calm and strength forward.
Buck (our boy) will remain intact so he can help continue her bloodline with the rest of our ewes next year.
Last year, she even took in Evie when her mother abandoned her — a true mama at heart.
Thank you to everyone who has walked this journey with us and held space for her and for us.

One of the greatest gifts of farm life is learning to slow down when it matters most — while also learning how quickly things can change.
When our ewe became ill a week after delivering her twins, everything else faded away. In that moment, farmers aren’t just caregivers — we become parents, nurses, vets, and problem-solvers all at once.
My kids watched me check temperatures, read gums, mix electrolytes, give medicine, teach babies to bottle feed, warm tiny bodies, research symptoms, and trust both instinct and knowledge. They saw compassion paired with responsibility. Emotion paired with action.
Some of these lessons can’t be taught in a classroom or found in a book. They’re passed down through generations, shaped by experience, loss, and love.
We love using Rustic Roots to share the fun side of farming — but there is so much more behind the scenes. So much exhaustion. So much heartbreak. And so much hidden knowledge that comes from a lifetime of stewarding farm animals.
As a third-generation rancher, I’m grateful to carry those lessons forward — and even more grateful to pass them on.
