We picked up 3 purebred mangalitsa gilts and a barrow this morning to revamp our breeding program. These girls will be the next line of breeding pigs on our homestead. We will be getting a young boar with them in a couple weeks which will be a new heritage breed to us we are excited!. More to come on him once it gets closer to his arrival. We are excited to be bringing these new genetics to the farm to bring a new cross of pig to the homestead that will hopefully take our meat quality to the best you can buy. We are excited they are here with us more pics to come as they settle in.

We planted the tomato’s and peppers this afternoon and had a fun gardening farm day. We started tarping off the area for our inground garden. Everyone was enjoying the break in the rain and we finished the day with some smoked spare ribs 😋

A little work this afternoon to get the garden ready to go for the season. Weeded and fresh compost down and we should be ready for planting on Monday. We will be adding a 20x20 no till in ground garden this year to expand what we can grow.

One of the biggest challenges on any homestead that is raising livestock is what to do with all of the bedding, manure and offal that these animals create when raising them for food. We try our best to use everything that’s created on our homestead and reduce our dependence on outside sources for growing our vegetables and gardens. All of the by products from butchering mixed with the manure, bedding and woodchips with some grass clippings creates a super rich compost that’s a great source of food for our plants. We use hot composting techniques and turn these piles every couple weeks and at the end we are left with about 1/3 of the total starting product. It’s all put back into our gardens to start the growing season and the process starts over again. This is a simple way to reuse and take advantage of what you already have availiable instead of buying a product year after year.
