Elderberries!

So good for you! Make jelly or syrup, add it to wine.

It’s easy to grow and if you have chickens, they will eat all the berries they can reach on the bottom of your plant.

It will spread out to about 8x8 and you can even save and dry the flowers to add to your syrups.

Oh, and we grow everything organically here.

Employe of the month: Reba. Let’s be honest, even though she’s a bit of a slacker, she’s been around so long, we just can’t let her go. Reba looks like a Rhode Island Red, but lays a pink/brown egg with little white spots, so we think she must be crossed with something else. She’s spunky, friendly with people, enjoys being held, and is the boss chicken. Rumor has it, Fancy is her favorite song.

Also, Loretta, my sweet girl, says Good Morning. She has been lying peacefully under the table since she was a tiny puppy. A few of the stools even have her teeth marks to prove it.

My new homesteading skill I want to learn in 2026 is candle making. My goal is for them to be free of artificial fragrances & use non toxic ingredients.
I have a request: if you have any cool containers or often burn candles, please save the containers for me. It can be something simple like a small jar or something cute like a tea cup. When you get enough collected that you want me to pick them up or you want to drop them off and visit, just text me.

If you drink kombucha, why are you not making your own yet?
It’s really easy, healthy, and can be quite fun.
If you’re in need of a SCOBY message me; every time I go to make a new batch of kombucha I have at least one or two extra. The entire process takes about 30 minutes. See the comments for instructions if you’re interested.

This week, I am making a batch of fresh elderberry syrup. I will be using frozen berries grown organically here on our homestead. Using the berries we grow here vs dried berries improves the taste so much. “It’s delicious” according to Vada,my 6yo, who asks for it. We’ve been taking a tsp-tbsp daily. Reach out if you’d like a jar. $20 a pint, $35 for a quart. A quart lasts us over a month unless someone is sick and we are taking more during a sickness.
Directions: Shake, take a tsp-tbsp daily. If sick, triple that.
