College or trades?
That’s not the real question anymore.
The real question is:
πŸ‘‰ Does your teen understand the financial impact of their choice?
Because without that knowledge, it’s easy to:

Take on unnecessary debt
Miss great opportunities
Feel stuck later

We break this down in our latest blogβ€”in a way that actually makes sense for families.

Part 1 of this series asked a hard question: what did we lose when we scheduled every moment of childhood?

The research answer is clear β€” and sobering.

But here's what I want you to take away from Part 1 before reading Part 2:

The patterns that show up in today's teens and young adults β€” anxiety, decision paralysis, avoidance, fragile self-confidence β€” are not character flaws.

They are the predictable outcome of an environment that didn't build certain things.

And what wasn't built can still be built.

That's what Part 2 is about.

Structured activities aren't the problem.

The problem is what gets crowded out when they fill every available hour.

When a child navigates a conflict without adult intervention β†’ they learn emotional regulation.

When they get bored and find their own way out β†’ they build self-direction.

When they make a bad decision and live with it β†’ they develop a sense that their choices matter.

Replace all of that with organized time, and something essential doesn't get built.

That's not a theory. The research is consistent across decades and multiple countries.

If you're a teen or young adult who struggles with any of these:

β†’ Making decisions without constant reassurance
β†’ Sitting with uncertainty or boredom
β†’ Trusting your own judgment
β†’ Handling conflict without someone stepping in
β†’ Feeling like your choices actually matter

The research has something important to say:

This is not a character flaw. You were not built wrong.

Something simply wasn't built β€” because the environment you grew up in didn't give you the raw material to build it.

A generation of scheduled, supervised, adult-managed childhoods produced exactly these outcomes. The research is consistent across multiple studies.

You didn't fail childhood. In a very real sense, childhood failed you.

And the research also says: it's not permanent.

According to research by Dr. Peter Gray at Boston College:

Anxiety in children today is higher than it was during the Great Depression.

Not because the world is more dangerous.

Because we removed the one thing that taught children to trust themselves inside it: unstructured, unsupervised, self-directed time.

When kids were free to navigate their own days β€” get bored, resolve conflicts, make bad decisions and live with them β€” they were building something real.

We filled that time with structure. The research says it cost us.

A meta-analysis examined over 18,000 young Americans across four decades.

The finding: by 2002, the average young person felt more externally controlled β€” more convinced that outside forces shaped their lives β€” than 80% of young people in the early 1960s.

In two generations, an entire culture shifted from "I shape my life" to "life happens to me."

That shift tracked almost perfectly with rising rates of anxiety and depression.

The researchers call it locus of control. I call it the feeling that your choices actually matter.

When you schedule every hour of childhood, you don't build that feeling. You crowd it out.

Kids in the 1970s left after breakfast and came home when the streetlights came on.

No schedule. No structured playdates. No adult standing by to mediate the disagreements.

Psychologists now believe they weren't missing out β€” they were doing the most important developmental work of their lives.

And when we replaced all of that with organized enrichment and adult-managed time across the 1980s and 90s, the data shows we paid a steep price.

I've been reading the research on what happened β€” and what it produced in today's teens and young adults. The findings are hard to sit with, and I think every parent and educator needs to see them.
