If you’ve driven by the farm lately, you’ve likely seen all the work going on and big piles of wood chips!
So what’s going on? We’re clearing in preparation for new tree fields that will be planted next spring! Currently we’re clearing, and mapping out the new fields and routes we will use for operations on the farm. This fall we’ll stump and prep the ground. Then in the spring we’ll plant thousands of new trees!
What’s the deal with the mountain of wood chips? We’ve elected to not use herbicides, but we still need to manage the w**ds any other plants that try to steal the nutrients from our trees, specifically the newer younger ones. Mulching wood chips is an excellent way to provide w**d control, maintain the proper pH in our soil, maintain soil temperatures, and keeps the soil moist longer, ultimately benefiting our trees. There are studies that have been conducted that mulching wood chips drastically improves survival of newly transplanted trees.
We get our fresh wood chips from local companies. We use tree services working in the area and when there aren’t any available via the tree service companies, we buy them through Boggs Logging in Ossipee. Our chips are all local to the area, and benefit the land and the companies involved.
Thank you to everyone who supports our farm and continues to enjoy our fresh eggs!
