Today we are winterizing the greenhouse. I grow greens and herbs all winter, so having the greenhouse winterized is very important. Today we specifically were learning about compost bins, and the benefits not only to the soil and plants, or the environment by reducing food waste, but also using it to naturally heat the greenhouse so our greens can grow! πŸ’© πŸͺ± 🍁

Parts of our homestead are picture-perfect, while other parts are just plain ugly.

That's normal.

There are lots of romantic farm life accounts these days, and there's nothing wrong with that.

But don't get so caught up in feeling like you must portray a specific image that you forget why you started. There's just as much value to be found in the messy middle, too. ❀️

I know there are a LOT of Mary Oliver fans out there-but Robert Frost is the OG of nature poetry πŸ˜† πŸ’œ

Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost
Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay

πŸ“ 🌻 The very last of my sunflowers. Sunflowers not only offer beauty, but they help the garden in so many ways, and then later, feed so many creatures. Today the meat birds also get a special treat of tomatoes. I learned this year that you can’t free-range Cornish crosses, it DOES NOT WORK. So, this is our last year with this breed. We will be hatching chicks in the spring to sell, and we will be raising Jersey Giants as a dual purpose bird (eggs and meat). They will have a more ethical life free ranging and will therefor also be more cost effective for the farm.

The runner-up goes to the: Red Zebra tomato heirloom
3rd: Beefsteak heirloom
4th: Brandywine heirloom

If you’re interested to see how I rate other veggies- like the grape and plum variety tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, beans, etc., be sure to stay tuned as I work on a video! I’ll also be sharing how I trouble shooter SEVERAL problems this year during the growing season!

Our little farm means the world to us. On our small 2 acre homestead just this year we have: raised chickens for meat and eggs, rabbits for meat, raised two hogs for meat, grown a garden enough to can for the year and sell, grew herbs for medicine and all-natural skin care products, sold garden starts, planted an orchard and a berry patch, and offered educational farm and nature-based learning programs. I’m so thankful for this place and so incredibly thrilled for all the resources that this land has given back πŸ’œ

Chickens. I love them. Sunflowers. I love them too. 🌻 The great thing about sunflowers is even after they fade away, they are a GREAT supplement to chickens and other birds! My chickens LOVE this tasty treat and it also keeps them from getting bored and wandering into the garden πŸ˜‰

Before you complain about someone’s prices, you should buy a cow.

Before you tell someone their milk, meat, soap, cheese, produce, etc. is over-priced, you should buy land.

Buy land. Pay for infrastructure. Buy a cow. Train the cow. Pay to Feed the cow. Care for the cow. Learn to milk the cow. Actually milk the cow. Cry over milk the cow kicked and spilled everywhere. Cry over your sick cow while you sit up all night with the vet. Stay up all night with your cow.

Before you complain about someone’s prices, show up. Show up every day. Even when it’s 106*. Even when there’s a hurricane. Even when it’s hailing. Even when it’s freezing and your hands don’t work right. Even when you only got one hour of scattered sleep the night before.

This post is not to complain, I wouldn’t trade this life for anything. But it’s important that everyday people understand what they are paying for. Small farms like ours don’t get government subsidies. We pay for everything out of pocket. Before you make a comment about prices think this through. I genuinely believe people make these comments out of ignorance, not to be ugly or rude.

Farmers pay for their products with their lives. Time, blood, energy, emotion, no days off. Most of us don’t break even, much less make a profit. We do this because we believe there is a better way.

When you buy local, you pay for more than the soap or milk or produce in your hands.

Before you complain. Buy a cow. Or goats. or grow a large garden.

Just be mindful.

Ugly right? This disaster of a cake was supposed to be my 2020 Heirloom Tomato Festival Baking Contest Entry. As you can see, things did not go according to plan πŸ˜‚ I remember feeling devastated but I went with plan b & submitted a dozen tomatoe cupcakes instead. If you've been following me long enough you know how this story ends πŸ˜‰ I FREAKING WON THE CONTEST!!

Fast forward a year later to today: this adorable sunflower tomato cake is my entry this year 😍 Win or lose, the lessons of 2020 have stuck with me. Things don't always go according to plan but they do have a way of working out. I can think of so many times in my life when what I thought I wanted was out of reach. Times when doors were suddenly slammed in my face & I was left feeling bewildered, lost & alone. The struggle is real but eventually with hindsight I'm able to see how better things were headed my way. I just didn't know it yet πŸ₯°

Thank you for sticking with me as I learn and grow 🌻 And remember, life can still surprise you πŸ’›πŸ’™
