I’ve had a lot of questions how I’m preparing my flock for the cold...so here it is:

I used a heat lamp our first year with chickens during a cold snap. I don’t do that anymore. I don’t think you’re horrible if you do, we just don’t. I feel like it wears the flock down and disrupts their natural laying cycle so now I:

Supplement with extra protein during cold snaps and make sure they have access to lots of water.

Use the deep layer method in the coop for winter!
This gives them the ability to nest in the bedding if the are cold AND the natural decomposition gives off natural heat!

I just added lots of straw in the coop-especially in drafty areas to block the wind.

It’s really key to block wind. Chickens have a higher body temperature, so the cold doesn’t hurt them as long as they have shelter from the wind.

If anyone spots an Indian female peacock in the Wolf Lake (350W)/High Lake area PLEASE let me know!! My female got out and I couldn’t get her back. She was last spotted heading towards 350W towards Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center. I love the girl and would be so happy to get her back 🦚 💜💙💚🦚 260-797-3175

If you follow our page, you know that my momma hens and her babies are all our winter greens in the greenhouse (nothing is chicken proof just FYI). Luckily, I’ve had great helpers helping to replant! We even have some sprouts already! We also installed a new grow light and expanded our in-greenhouse compost system. You can also follow what we do Great Minds to see it on a more educational level!

We are trying a winter sowing of potatoes to try to get 2 harvests next year. This planting should be ready in June and then we can replant in time for a second harvest! We also got garlic in!!!! 😋

Today we are winterizing the greenhouse. I grow greens and herbs all winter, so having the greenhouse winterized is very important. Today we specifically were learning about compost bins, and the benefits not only to the soil and plants, or the environment by reducing food waste, but also using it to naturally heat the greenhouse so our greens can grow! 💩 🪱 🍁

Parts of our homestead are picture-perfect, while other parts are just plain ugly.

That's normal.

There are lots of romantic farm life accounts these days, and there's nothing wrong with that.

But don't get so caught up in feeling like you must portray a specific image that you forget why you started. There's just as much value to be found in the messy middle, too. ❤️
