There will always be bulls who we believe are true parentstock. A bull worthy of this title will be long gone before it’s known whether or not he was bred close enough to transmit his ancestors traits across the population. His daughters will be that proof but only when they are old and almost worn out. We spend years of our lives to find only a few worth the effort. I hope he makes it, because his mother and her mother and her mother have given me so much to be thankful for!

Counterintuitive: contrary to intuition or to common sense expectation (but nevertheless true)

We purposely inbreed our cattle to increase their ability to spread traits across commercial cows more consistently. Inbreeding increases prepotency in our herd but it also decreases individual heterosis. It's counterintuitive to use a bull who looks like this to make cows who are feminine, fit, and fertile. The fact is, he is one of the best female sires we have ever used.

Testicle quality at its finest. Well hung with an exceptional waxy tone to the skin. This bull has a well defined epididymis. His testicles hang evenly with an ability to drop down to cool, in extreme heat and be held up in cold weather. This bull is the rule, not the exception!

We have some crossbred cows that we have kept as examples of the benefits of heterosis. The Charolais cross cows are out of in**ed angus cows and Charolais bulls. We raised the in**ed parents to maintain a stable genepool that we can always go back to. The pool offers us predictable calving ease, mothering instinct, calving ability. These qualities are renewable within the genepool and we take full advantage of them to use as an example of why we maintain the closed genepool. The crossbred cows is more fertile and longer lived than any straightbred or purebred cow. She is more fit and tolerates more stress while overwintering a calf at side, while maintaining herself in a grazing environment. The downside to the crossbred cow is she cannot renew herself with any reliability, making the purebred population necessary.
