The Twisted Raccoon La Dispute

"How difficult it is just to exist and to survive,
theres beauty and theres anguish tangled helplessly inside,
what a miracle it is that we get to be alive...."

Our Loofahs are outta control. Not only did they outgrow their trellis...they took over their moon flower neighbors trellis. When that wasn't enough they claimed the catnip, sage, mint and finally the yard....

We are fortunate to be surrounded by mother nature. During the day we can watch the deer and numerous bird species. However, the night shift is our favorite. Bats take over the skies, fox and coyote yell in the woods, and our back deck becomes a major rest stop. Throughout the night dozens of raccoons and several possum stop in. I absolutely love when the mamas start to bring their littles out to teach them. This mama has very distinctive markings and her litter of 4 is very well mannered and absolutely adorable.

This weekends big score left me and my dear neighbor friend scratching our heads. I had no clue what it was...only that I wanted it cuz it looked pretty darn cool. I brought it home, cleaned it up, put it back together and went on research mode. Turns out it was a once in a lifetime find for me.
I present my new vintage water bottle dispenser complete with stand.
Before things got way techy you would put a 5 gallon glass water bottle in the holder and tip it. Pretty snazzy I think and in amazing condition.

I am currently locked in several battles of will right now. The Trio and the size appropriate feeder/waterers, June bugs and all our beans, peppers, basil and sage and the battle of Harold.
Harold is a black snake that has repeatedly been evicted from the Skittles Coop for theft of eggs. He's on strike 50 right now I think. We live on a 20 acre plot and each time he's busted he gets placed further back. (It is legal and humane to relocate...not translocate species. Relocate =same forage/habitat area. I.E, front yard to backyard. Translocate = removal to a separate/different forage/habitat. I.E, your property to a park 5 miles away.)
While he is an irritation, we would never use lethal methods on any animal for simply doing what they are programed to do. Maybe if he'd leave the eggs be for a bit he could work on the rodents.
Harold and his egg were relocated further into the woods.

Deuce, Goose and Moose episode 2....
The hardest part of being a parent is being firm and setting boundaries. This is an important foundation is a young ones life. I will absolutely own the fact that I have lapsed in that often. Did my boys use their paci's longer than they should....probably. Did we have way more than the recommended dose of chicken nuggets in their childhood...definitely.
Now on to today's chicken drama.
If you remember, the trio of "I do what I want" has bucked any normal behavior required of chickeness. Roosting..nope. Going to coop at night...nope. Size appropriate feeders/waterers...nope. Self preservation when the other roos alert to potential danger...nope.
As the good parent I am filling their 4 chick sized waterers multiple times daily as appropriate size 1 gallon waterers are still not to be trusted and its too hot to be thirsty. We compromised on the feeder by pulling the bin off and just filling the bottom tray. Trio quickly decided that feed must be emptied onto ground. Well, APPARENTLY once feed hits the dirt it is no longer fit for consumption. So I put the 1 gallon feeder out and told them I was done being bullied. Their response is to spend their day clucking at high volume as if Sarah Machlochlan herself was in the neighborhood. I'm about to break. I know me...I know my fear of them not eating will have their pan back by end of business and they will never learn how to eat from a feeder.
Send prayers....I'm losing the battle of wills.

On today's episode of "Just what the coop.." we meet Deuce, Goose and Moose. They are my daily reminder that basic chickeness is not a traight you are born with. They have taken to chicken life like a duck to accounting. Size appropriate waterers and feeders are to be feared and only chick sized ones are acceptable. Roosting bars are a dangerous ploy put in place by "the man" so ground sleep is mandatory. While other fledglings learned to go to coop by themselves after only a few nights of being manhandled and forcibly placed into said coop, these guys still enjoy the nightly chase and forced confinement. They have fully embraced the anarchist lifestyle and shun any organized flock, aka regime, outside of their own little trio. We are happy to allow them to live their best life in our unexpected bachelor pad.

First recipe share is so dang simple. I've made it for my boys for years (it's one of their favorites) and I make it everytime they come up from N.C to visit. I can't remember exactly where I got it from but I'm pretty sure it was from one of my ex M.I.L's. 🤷‍♀️
Its super cheap, super easy and feeds a bunch of folks.

Chicken Cassarole
2 cans of canned chicken (or 2 cup of shredded
fresh chicken if your fancypants)
16 Oz sour cream
1-2 cans condensed cream of chicken soup
Don't add milk or water.
1 bag of medium egg noodles.
Optional addins- peppers, onions, cheese
Optional for topping- fried onions, uncooked
stuffing, cheese or crushed croutons
Optional seasonings to your preferences (I use
cajun, salt, pepper, hot sauce, onion and garlic)

Cook noodles per instructions. Drain and
set aside.
In a bowl mix can of condensed soup, sourcream,
seasonings.
Add in chicken next and noodles last. (This keeps
the chicken and noodles from being destroyed)
Dump into a 9x13 pan and put your toppings on Bake at 350 for 45mins or until top is brown.
