Seed saving the bitter melon for next season. Parya is beloved in my region in the Philippines, which is Pangasinan. This is a tropical plant that thrives in sun and heat, which is madness trying to grow it in the PNW cold and rain. But because our concentrated summer gives us up to 14 hours of sunlight, it can work. If you have ideas on how to preserve the fruit and leaves let me know. 🙂 Be safe out there farmers and workers.

Makulay ang Buhay sa Sinabawang Gulay!

My big brothery (Kuya) Felix shared this with me. Granted it is a commercial but how adorable is this?! It's in Tagalog where you see little kids singing and expressing their joy of eating vegetable soup (sinabawang gulay). "Life is more colorful with vegetable soup, every sip will give you joy, you will get stronger and feel you can do anything.".....They are right you know.

With Sharleen, Nash and Aaron. The 4th song of Makulay ang Buhay Story! Salamat sa mga tumangkilik!

Cynthia Alexander is a singer-songwriter, composer, and guitar player with a cult following in her native Philippines. Daughter of Filipina poet Tita Lacambra-Ayala and Filipino painter/fictionist Jose V. Ayala Jr., Cynthia has always been surrounded by a culture of art and surrealism. Cynthia got her start playing gongs and bass with her big brother Joey Ayala’s band Bagong Lumad (The New Native), with whom she extensively toured Asia and North America. Now based in Tacoma, Washington, Cynthia is a floral designer and ‘plant doctor’ by day. When she is not playing or writing music, she paints or draws and tends to her little indoor plants and her Japanese maples. She is currently focused on building deeper connections in her new community, while also maintaining close ties with her fans and family back in Manila. 'Everyone tested positive': Covid devastates agriculture workers in California's heartland

"Workers and workers’ rights organizations say these outbreaks and the subsequent swell of infections in the Central Valley point to a devastating truth: that we are each only as protected as our least protected; as vulnerable as our most vulnerable.

'“You can appear to contain the spread among middle-class workers but when it reaches those workers who are furthest on the margins, who are most disadvantaged, the virus is going to spread,” said Edward Flores, a sociology professor at the University of California, Merced."''

The virus is surging in the Central Valley, where hundreds of thousands labor in the food industry. Workers say companies did little to prevent the spread

Somewhere on top of the “must have list” for Filipinos lies garlic. Many of us can go our whole lives using tons without diving too deep on how many varieties there are, how hard they can be to grow, and the people that dedicate their lives to these gems. Yesterday our team received 6 out of 600 or so varieties: Romanian, Roja, Killarney, Music, Montana, and Asian Tempest (we just call it Tempest😄). All from three amazing producers that our dear friend Ari of Kamayan Farm connected us with during this pandemic: Emma from Rising Sign Farm, Andrew from Regeneration Farm, and Lorna from Sariwa Farm . Some things we’ve learned: They’re as different as wines, but perhaps create less of an attraction to your partner (unless their into that) Every Garlic we tasted will eventually be gone locally in a few months (a kind of creativity building/prescribed torture like appreciation). Preservation for Winter is on high alert. Garlic like this, from people like this—is a microcosm of the economics of our entire food system appreciated through the lens of this true heirloom of culture. In other words, yes friends— it’s most definitely worth it. #digdeeperandyoullfindyourroots
