Rutland's Williams family plans future of former Heifer Project farm

"The long-range plan for Overlook is to take a page from Heifer’s model and continue doing some of the same things the organization did while offering other programs and adding different aspects, including focusing on being “a little more vocalized about and acknowledge that there is food insecurity everywhere, even local to us,” Williams said."
Congratulations Sap Castle and the William family on receiving your 501c3 status! We are thrilled for the progressive's of your project.

Do you participate in the HIP program? We would love to hear from you!
On Nov 19th legislators will hear testimony about the program to consider signing the program into law, this means it will be available to farmers and SNAP clients each year and not vulnerable to administrative changes. This would be a great success!
Contact us to share the impact of the HIP program for your family or your farm business.

Domestic Dairy Demand at 56-Year High | Farm Journal's MILK Business

Dairy farmers are the backbone of our agricultural system as the stewards of the majority of our lands.
“Dairy farmers surely welcome this news, though some are still left to wonder why milk prices have been so low over the past five years. The primary reasons, say economists, are that world markets have been soft and dairy exports have lagged due to global market disruptions, trade disputes and tariffs.”

Other dairy product sales have more than made up for fluid milk losses.

Maplebrook Farmstead

Maplebrook Farmstead captured amazing footage of their honeybees defending the hive.

Our bee hives are under attack by yellow jackets. If they can penetrate the hive, they’ll eat honey, larvae, eggs, and pupae, basically anything they can find. Strong, healthy hives can defend against the YJ’s, but newer or weaker ones have trouble. We lost one of our hives this week.
Our beekeepers reduced the size of the entrance to the hives so that there’s a smaller space for guard bees to protect. They’re holding off on collecting more honey because that would involve breaking the natural seal at the top of the hives and create more space for the yellow jackets to enter. Beekeep Lori Brosnihan caught this amazing slow mo video yesterday of hive combat.

Happy Anniversary to the Massachusetts Building at the Big E!!
Be sure to stop by on your fair visit this year to learn more about agriculture in our great State!

On this day exactly 100 years ago in 1919, the Massachusetts State Exposition Building was dedicated on the Big E fairgrounds becoming the first building on the Avenue of States.

As the first state building to achieve this milestone, we spent the morning celebrating our birthday with members of our State Legislature, Eastern States Exposition management and our Lt. Governor Karyn Polito!

Here's to another 100 years of showcasing Massachusetts agriculture, industry and tourism!!

MDAR - Aerial Mosquito Spray Mapping Tool

To combat the serious cases of EEE, aerial sprays will be completed in Worcester, Norfolk and Middlesex counties over the next three to four days. This map will be updated by MDAR regularly to indicate which regions have been sprayed.
Beekeepers be sure to cover your hives each night over the next few days.

This mapping tool can be used to view the planned spray area, to determine whether a specific location is inside the spray area, or to see exactly which areas were sprayed.

40 Under Forty 2019: Mackenzie May

Congratulations to our Executive Director, Mackenzie May, for her recognition as one of Worcester Business Journal’s Forty Under 40! We knew how lucky we were the minute she walked in for her interview and are so happy that others do now too! Her passion for her work is unending and contagious; and she has built connections to strengthen local food networks; advocate for farms and food access across the region; grow the organization; and — most importantly — support and promote our Members and Farms and what they produce.

Thank You for all you do and Congratulations on your achievement! We know there are more great things ahead for CMG under your leadership!

The push for plant-based diets and lifestyles are plastered in almost every grocery store, popping up in television product commercials, and flashing ads on every social media platform, basically— everywhere you look...

One of the top reasons ‘why’ we hear from plant-based advocates is, the need to reduce carbon footprint by reducing animal agriculture, especially emissions produced from producing our products and animal manure (‘farting cows’ as our well-educated politicians like to call them). 🐄

Marketing is everything. I know it. I have a marketing degree and took countless hours of classes on branding and marketing strategies. And right now— the plant-based movement is doing bang-up job marketing their cause. It’s loud, it’s proud, it’s flashy, it’s catchy and it’s passionate BUT it is also incredibly deceiving. I believe in honest marketing, you can use every single trick in your media tool kit but bold out-faced lies shouldn’t be one of them. 🌱

The truth about the dairy industry and greenhouse emissions goes like this: A 2010 Report from the UN’s FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) concluded that beef and milk production from global dairy herds account for only 4.1% of global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). This starkly contrasts with higher levels that are often reported in the media, based on older reports and questionable methodology.

To break down this 4.1% even further:
- Milk production only accounts for 2.7% of GHG.
- Beef from dairy cows and non-milk producing dairy calves account for 1.3% of GHG.

Basically— if you own a car, travel by plane or train but eat a plant-based diet, you’re still largely contributing to greenhouse emissions. If you use heat to warm your home and electricity to cool your home but eat a plant-based diet, you’re still largely contributing to greenhouse emissions. If you use things in your home that then travel to a waste management facility but eat a plant-based diet, you’re still largely contributing to greenhouse emissions. 🦶

Between 1944 and 2007, milk yield in the United States has increased four-fold – while using 90% less cropland, 76% less manure, 65% less water and 63% less carbon.

Further proof that farmers continue to be good stewards and caretakers of the land. Instead of a linear incline of growth in their carbon footprint they have drastically reduced their footprint, because— you guys! They care. Read that again. They care! They care about the land and the atmosphere. They care about what they produce and how they produce it. They care about what kind of earth they are entrusting to the next generation. They’re not careless and uneducated, they’re careful and innovative. They have come a long way over the past several decades and they do not get the amount of the credit that they deserve. 🐄🌿
