These are dahlia seedlings, meaning dahlias I grew from seed I saved last year. I won’t be keeping any of these specific ones for next season, but aren’t they just beautiful?

​Dahlias are octochromosomal, which means they have eight strands of DNA. Because of this, every single dahlia grown from seed is genetically unique. That means the exact flower you are looking at has never been seen by human eyes before!

It is so fascinating to save seed from a specific cross and watch something completely unexpected bloom thanks to those complex genetics.

​The single dahlias, which are the ones that look like colorful daisies, carry a dominant trait. The semi doubles, the blooms with more layers of petals, are a mix between a full and a single. A true full double flower is like winning the genetic lottery. (There are none shown in the pictures, I am saving those to show later!)

The dahlias are starting to bloom! My favorite thing is the quiet moments in the morning, while the sun is still waking, walking through the rows and looking at all the new blooms.

I am at Wytheville today, until noon!!

I will be at the Wytheville Farmers Market tomorrow, but this week’s menu will be very limited.

After the loss of my mom this week, I am taking things one day at a time and giving myself some grace while still trying to show up for our community.

As of now, I plan to have:
Classic and chocolate croissants
Cookies
Ooey gooey bars
Fresh cut flowers

Unfortunately, there will be no sourdough this week. I appreciate your understanding and patience more than I can express.

Thank you all for the kindness, prayers, messages, and support you have shown my family during this difficult time. It has meant more than you know.

My mother passed away this morning. I am unsure if I will be able to attend market this weekend, but if I do, it will be with an extremely limited menu. I apologize for any inconvenience and thank you all for the support and grace I have been shown.
