🧚♂️ Fairy eggs🧚
In the first picture, I have two fairy eggs, a first egg from one of my project pullets and a year-old hen's egg.
Fairy eggs are tiny, usually yolkless eggs laid by chickens. They can have yolk or not and they are very small. They happen when a hen's reproductive system accidentally skips releasing a yolk and encases just egg white in a shell. Usually, younger hens or older hens will lay fairy eggs, but they can also be caused by stress or improper nutrition.
So, who do I think is laying fairy eggs and why? Well, the larger fairy egg was laid by an EE pullet on 5/23. I had been watching her to see what color she would lay, and unfortunately, it was cream. She has since been rehomed, which leaves the smaller, dirtier egg. I found it late last night in the run when I was making sure everyone got to bed. It was not in the laying area, so there are no cameras to spot the layer. I do not know how long it has been there or who laid it. But if I had to put money on it, I would say it was Gertrude. Gertrude is my 5-year-old naked neck hen, and she has a bit of a fairy egg track record. We had a bit of a heat wave last week, and Mrs. Gertie does not like the heat. The last two years, when it gets warm, she either stops laying or lays a fairy egg!
With that being said, I will keep an eye out for more fairy eggs, and if we keep having this issue, we will revisit stressors and other causes for fairy eggs!
