I just pulled these sweat peas in from the garden before leaving it to the bats and the fireflies. I wish you could smell this picture! Last year and this year my sweet peas have had lackluster growth. They don’t love the SD weather changes, but I’m trying to figure them out - I want to share this flower!

Thanks to everyone who bought flowers! I’ve got extra bouquets coming out of my ears as the spring turns to summer and I made more this week than last! Also, this heat is really turning up the dial for my plants- there wasn’t a bloom in sight on this patch after my last Thursday morning picking and look today- two days! Also, I FINALLY got the drip lines back up and running yesterday and this morning.

I don’t have many bearded irises ready yet this year (hopefully next year!) but this one snuck open on me today. I try to only sell the freshest blooms that have opened the most recently so this one is going on my end table for me to enjoy (at least until I get a floral fridge). But look at how HUGE this sucker is!! 👀

Ranunculus (AKA buttercups) are incoming- so many buds! They don’t looks so showy when they are shut but when they open...🤩🤩, this little gem was sneaky and didn’t look ready to pick a Thursday or Friday and then today she popped all the way open!! Hoping to have some bouquets that include these gems for the Thursday farmer’s market in Vermillion... #walkinthepasque #buildmeupbuttercup #sdgrown #slowflowers

My kitchen is being remodeled, so I was actually pretty glad to have one bouquet left as a pick-me-up in this chaotic space. Thank you to everyone who bought, complimented, and asked about my flowers this week. Encourage your friends to #walkinthepasque next weekend, as I’m planning to have more bouquets Thursday for the Vermillion farmers market, and will likely follow with some bouquets for the flower stand I will set up again by my house. #sdgrown #freshcutflowers #slowflowers

Irises, as with most cut flowers, last longer in a vase when they are cut before they open. Flowers are meant to be pollinated so the plant can begin to make seeds- successful pollination is a signal to the plant that it doesn’t need the flower anymore. I’m always trying to cut flowers just before or as soon as they first open, depending on the variety. My bouquets will have irises in them at the Vermillion farmer’s market this Thursday! #walkinthepasque #sdgrown #freshcutflowers

They might not look like much yet, but ranunculus (AKA buttercup) blooms are on their way and they are one of my favorites! These flowers are both unique and long lasting.

So far this weekend I have planted 50 zinnia seedlings, 6 delphinium plants, and 2 new butterfly bushes. For the family garden side of things I’ve also planted the zucchini ,melons, cucumbers, and 9 varieties of beans. Did anyone else do some gardening this weekend??

These were even more beautiful a couple days ago, but like good midwesterners we are slow to crank the AC and will melt along with our flowers today. I’m again reminded how much a floral cooler would be a game changer for preserving blooms right at the perfect harvesting stage to slow down their ripening! I’ll cross my fingers that next year I’ll be able to sell some of these beauties as cut flowers! #seasongoals #smellssogood

These bleeding hearts I planted last fall were so beautiful until the frost came through a couple days ago! The poor plants shriveled in sadness at the cold, but I noticed today signs of recovery! Hoping they grow enough this summer that I can see how they do in a vase next summer!

I’ve had some beautiful flowers this spring but with my garage under construction and no floral fridge it’s no use harvesting my beautiful flowers early and keeping them dormant until I have an opportunity to sell them. This year I’ll have to enjoy most of my early spring blooms by myself, but I hope by next spring I’ll have something in place so I can harvest and sell some of these beauties!

I know I’ve been very quiet in the winter months (much like my garden) but everything is starting to wake up now and I should too! Here’s some of what Came out of my garden last season! I started my little flower stand the very end of June, and I’ve never sold wreaths, although I make my own each year (maybe I’ll try that this season too?). This year I would like to start a bi-monthly bouquet subscription for June-September. Delivery would be two Sunday afternoons a month, cost $30 per month (large bouquets of seasonal flowers), in Yankton or the lake area west of Yankton. Spots will be limited as this is all very new to me, I’m just starting out. If you are interested in a flower subscription I would love feedback- please message me.

What do you do when you are stressed out but your relaxing hobby involves being outside and it’s daylight savings now? Anyone else ever worked in the garden in the dark because the weather was just too nice to pass up?? I turned in old mulch/leaves to another couple of beds and top dressed with some beautiful compost. I think- I could hardly see it 😂🤷‍♀️. The garden frog I accidentally scared was camera shy so I couldn’t get a shot of him.

13 more feet of planting- these ones are daffodils ❤️❤️. I couldn’t get my tiller started to help me dig the trench so I had to work by hand- at least all that snow last week helped loosen things up a bit. I’m now just over 1/3 done planting the last of my five new perennial beds.

Then I just have to finish amending and winterizing the raised beds in the main garden before I can hunker down for a few months.
