Walk in the Pasque: Fresh Cut Flowers

Well my “real job” starts again tomorrow so today I decided to make a bouquet for my classroom, my home desk, and my dining table just to infuse some summer joy into these spaces before the busy bustle takes over. Like so many other moms before me I wish I could do it all perfectly - the side hustle I’m passionate about, the teaching, the kids, the home stuff- but there’s only so many hours in the day and I know it’ll take awhile to find equilibrium again. If anyone wants to order flowers, reach out and I’ll see what I can do, but I won’t be at the market for the foreseeable future, and I probably won’t be consistent with a roadside stand either.

Finally heading back to the Vermillion farmer’s market this week! Bouquets have Cosmos and zinnias and dahlias and sunflowers, some snap dragons, yarrow, and Queen Ann’s lace. Market starts at 3:00!

I’m trying something new with my flowers- trying my hand at some dried flower art. What do you think? Is this an item you can see yourself or someone you know purchasing and enjoying? These are 8 x 10 rose gold double glass frames meant to sit on a shelf. Flowers include larkspur, sweet peas, California poppies, and coreopsis, along with some grasses and foliage.

The greenhouses are empty BUT we have some exciting news!! Tamara Carns will be bringing some of her beautiful fresh cut flowers to sell at our store! They’ll be available today starting at 2pm until 6pm or until they run out!

Due to visiting with family this week, I will not be at the Vermillion Market today, however, if you are in the Yankton area and would like to pick up flowers tomorrow afternoon, please let me know as I do have lots of flowers to cut- could do $10 bouquets with zinnias, Cosmos, and a few sunflowers. Could also do $5 bunches of sweet peas, all depending on availability. Message me if you are interested!

Here are some of the large bouquets I made last night for the Vermillion farmer’s market today. I’ve got a few more large bouquets and will have several smaller bouquets with similar flowers in them. I just pulled these sweat peas in from the garden before leaving it to the bats and the fireflies. I wish you could smell this picture! Last year and this year my sweet peas have had lackluster growth. They don’t love the SD weather changes, but I’m trying to figure them out - I want to share this flower!

Thanks to everyone who bought flowers! I’ve got extra bouquets coming out of my ears as the spring turns to summer and I made more this week than last! Also, this heat is really turning up the dial for my plants- there wasn’t a bloom in sight on this patch after my last Thursday morning picking and look today- two days! Also, I FINALLY got the drip lines back up and running yesterday and this morning.

I don’t have many bearded irises ready yet this year (hopefully next year!) but this one snuck open on me today. I try to only sell the freshest blooms that have opened the most recently so this one is going on my end table for me to enjoy (at least until I get a floral fridge). Ranunculus (AKA buttercups) are incoming- so many buds! They don’t looks so showy when they are shut but when they open...🤩🤩, this little gem was sneaky and didn’t look ready to pick a Thursday or Friday and then today she popped all the way open!! Hoping to have some bouquets that include these gems for the Thursday farmer’s market in Vermillion...

My kitchen is being remodeled, so I was actually pretty glad to have one bouquet left as a pick-me-up in this chaotic space. Thank you to everyone who bought, complimented, and asked about my flowers this week. Encourage your friends to next weekend, as I’m planning to have more bouquets Thursday for the Vermillion farmers market, and will likely follow with some bouquets for the flower stand I will set up again by my house.

Irises, as with most cut flowers, last longer in a vase when they are cut before they open. Flowers are meant to be pollinated so the plant can begin to make seeds- successful pollination is a signal to the plant that it doesn’t need the flower anymore. I’m always trying to cut flowers just before or as soon as they first open, depending on the variety. My bouquets will have irises in them at the Vermillion farmer’s market this Thursday!

They might not look like much yet, but ranunculus (AKA buttercup) blooms are on their way and they are one of my favorites! These flowers are both unique and long lasting.

So far this weekend I have planted 50 zinnia seedlings, 6 delphinium plants, and 2 new butterfly bushes. For the family garden side of things I’ve also planted the zucchini ,melons, cucumbers, and 9 varieties of beans. Did anyone else do some gardening this weekend??

Wish us luck! Today my flowers and I will be heading out to our first event of the season- Vermillion Farmers market! It’ll be my first ever farmers market, 👀👀
