Some desserts just taste like childhood, and for me, Pineapple Upside Down Cake is right at the top of that list. My grandmothers knew exactly how to get that perfect caramelized brown sugar and pineapple crust in the home kitchen, but bringing that magic to the campsite takes a little extra cast iron know-how!

In today's full recipe video, I'm showing you how to recreate this classic family favorite entirely from scratch right in a Dutch oven. It is buttery, sweet, and absolutely worth the effort of managing the coals.

Want to try this on your next trip but missing the right gear to get started? I’ve rounded up all my battle-tested favorites, including the Dutch ovens I trust, all in one place.

I vividly remember my early days of trying to bake over a campfire—it was a lot of burnt bottoms and doughy middles before I finally learned the secret to heat management!

A Dutch oven isn't just a heavy cast iron pot; it's a 360-degree outdoor oven, but only if you know how to wield the heat. For this Scout Skill Wednesday, I’m pulling a lesson right out of Mr. Tim's Toolbox to show you the simple math for achieving perfect campfire temperatures without the guesswork.

What was your toughest lesson learned when you first started cooking outdoors? Tell me your best campfire cooking fail in the comments!

Some of the best campfire meals I remember from growing up didn't just start at the fire ring—they started in the dirt.

Welcome to another Around the Camp Tuesday! Taking the time to grow your own fresh ingredients makes all the difference when you're cooking under the open sky. The sage and basil are ready to harvest and dry, and the poblanos are thriving right next to our jalapeños and onions. There is nothing quite like adding homegrown flavors to a classic Dutch oven recipe.

What are you growing for your camp kitchen this season? Let me know in the comments below, and if you're looking to upgrade your outdoor cooking setup, check out the gear I trust to get the job done right.

This morning's Sausage Tortilla Breakfast Bake was already in our collection. We've added a revised version using regular onions instead of green onions.

Some flavors just transport you right back in time. For me, the sweet, buttery taste of a Pineapple Upside Down Cake brings back incredible memories of the cooking wisdom passed down by my grandmothers and aunts. There is something truly special about taking those family recipes and bringing them to life from scratch out by the campfire.

Peeling back that paper to see the perfect caramelization on the pineapple rings never gets old! Be sure to check out the full video on the page to see exactly how to manage the coals to bake this classic.

If you want to start bringing these heritage bakes to your own campsite, I’ve put all my battle-tested cast iron and gear in one place.
